Software Engineer

Software EngineerThe Clearing House (TCH) is seeking a Software Engineer to join our RTP Product Engineering team. As a member of the team, you will be responsible for developing and enhancing our critical real-time interbank payment platform, including development of new applications and features while improving the functionality, reliability, and performance of existing applications. The Software Engineer works directly with RTP Product teams and the Director of Product Engineering to ensure quality code deliverables are completed on time and in accordance with TCH Standards. The Software Engineer also works closely with Operations and Technology to define and implement new features and ensure system resiliency.This is an opportunity to develop advanced software engineering skills while working on complex, high-value systems that form part of the financial services infrastructure. You will work alongside experienced engineers to develop, test, enhance, and support highly reliable applications for the payments industry while using AI-assisted automation and engineering practices within the software development lifecycle.TCH values engineers who are technically curious, pragmatic, and interested in understanding how complex systems work, end to end. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on software engineer who has a solid foundation in Java development, some exposure to Python, and a strong interest in building industry-critical applications using cloud, container, automation, and distributed-system technologies.Essential functions and responsibilities:Design, develop, test, and maintain highly reliable software supporting real-time payment processingWrite clean and maintainable Java code compliant with TCH quality standards and secure coding practicesDevelop software components leveraging enterprise Java frameworks such as Spring and Spring BootDevelop Python scripts and programs as needed for data automation and integration servicesParticipate in the modernization of existing applications and migration toward cloud-native platformsDevelop and maintain services, APIs, application components, and automated testsParticipate in code reviews, technical discussions, troubleshooting, and engineering design activitiesApply CI/CD practices for automated building, testing, and deployment of high-quality softwareWork with containerized applications and Kubernetes-based environments for component-based releasesBuild applications on AWS cloud platforms using Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as TerraformWork with messaging and event-driven technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ where appropriateAssist with monitoring, troubleshooting, defect resolution, and root-cause analysisFollow established security, software development, testing, documentation, and change management practicesCollaborate with software engineers, architects, product teams, infrastructure teams, and operationsUse approved AI-assisted development tools to support coding, testing, documentation, and continuous quality improvements in accordance with enterprise controlsQualifications required:Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or related fieldsSolid understanding of core software engineering concepts including object-oriented and functional programming, data structures, APIs, automated testing, and source code control.3+ years in Java software development experience including analysis, design, development, documentation, implementation and testing of systemsExperience developing Python scripts and programs for data management and analysisExposure to working in AWS or another major public cloud provider and familiar with cloud-native application architectures, microservices, containers, and distributed systemsSolid understanding of CI/CD and automated software build/deployment processesStrong problem-solving and analytical skills to apply to software design, testing, and troubleshootingStrong interest in designing and building highly available and highly reliable systemsAbility and willingness to learn new technologies and work collaboratively within an engineering team.Ability to communicate clearly with technical teams and non-technical partnersCollaborative team player that connects with peers and across other teamsQualifications desired:Familiarity with enterprise Java frameworks such as Spring and Spring BootExperience with Git-based development, automated testing, and CI/CD toolingExposure to Docker, containers, and/or Kubernetes for application deploymentExposure to AWS cloud services, including developer training and certificationsExperience using agile development methodologies and tools such as JiraExperience with Infrastructure-as-Code concepts and development tools such as TerraformExposure to event-driven designs or messaging platforms, such as Kafka or RabbitMQInterest in financial technology, banking, payments, or transaction-processing systemsBehavioral & Leadership Competencies:Possesses and applies broad knowledge of concepts, exhibiting technical expertise in core subject areasDemonstrates commitment to excellence, anticipates needs, mitigates risks and minimizes challengesEffectively engages teammates and internal/external partners through a customer focused approachWorks well independently with minimal instruction/guidance, confident to escalate issues appropriatelySets priorities and handles multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environmentRecommends innovative solutions aligned with organizational initiatives and recognized problem areasPhysical demands and work environment:Ability to remain seated for long periods of time while working on computer or editing.Ability to work under highly stressful deadlines.Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.Ability to prioritize appropriatelyAbility to sit and review information on a computer screen for long periods of timeAbility to report to the office three days each week.
