Job Description

The Quality Lab Technician performs laboratory testing to ensure all production batches meet established quality specifications before and during filling. This role focuses on evaluating color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties, determining necessary adjustments, and documenting all quality activities in accordance with defined procedures and ISO standards. The technician supports both routine quality control and short-term projects that improve the efficiency of the Quality Department.

Responsibilities

• Conduct prescribed testing of production batches in the QC lab using established test methods.
• Verify that all production batches meet established specifications for color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties prior to filling.
• Ensure all batches meet required color limits and that products remain within specification at the time of filling.
• Determine and implement appropriate adjustments to bring products into quality specifications.
• Record all batch adjustments, fill checks, and related quality data on batch tickets accurately and in a timely manner.
• Prepare fill check panels and provide approvals for filling based on test results.
• Approve final fill check panels for production and communicate findings clearly to relevant personnel.
• Follow all ISO procedures and maintain compliance with documented quality processes.
• Consult with the Quality Manager on quality issues, approvals, and process improvements as needed.
• Support and participate in various short-term projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Quality Department.
• Transfer hazardous wastes such as filters, rags, scrap paint, and solvents to the satellite hazardous waste area as required.
• Apply and follow proper labeling requirements for hazardous waste containers as part of daily job functions.
• Complete required annual RCRA training and apply the training in daily handling of hazardous materials and waste.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work station and retain storage area in the lab.
• Collaborate with production personnel, including pulling and testing samples, to support timely and accurate quality checks.
• Ask questions, communicate proactively, and engage positively with team members to support a strong quality culture.

Essential Skills

• 1–2 years of quality control (QC) laboratory experience, preferably in an industry with similar testing requirements.
• Hands-on experience performing wet chemistry or similar laboratory testing.
• Experience conducting tests related to color, gloss, viscosity, and physical properties.
• Ability to interpret test results and determine appropriate product adjustments to meet specifications.
• Basic math skills, including working with percentages and fractions, to support calculations and adjustments.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate testing, documentation, and compliance with specifications.
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple batches, tests, and documentation requirements simultaneously.
• Comfort working with hazardous materials and following safety procedures and regulations.
• Ability to follow ISO procedures and adhere to established quality and documentation standards.
• Ability to distinguish colors accurately to assess and verify color limits.
• Willingness and ability to complete and apply annual RCRA training for hazardous waste handling.
• Comfort working both in the lab and occasionally on the production floor.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Industry-related QC lab experience is preferred but not required.
• Previous experience in a production environment, especially involving pulling and testing samples, is preferred.
• Knowledge of colors and an eye for visual differences in color and appearance.
• Outgoing, inquisitive attitude with a willingness to ask questions and learn.
• Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative team environment.
• Strong organizational skills to maintain orderly workstations and retain storage.
• Interest in participating in short-term projects to improve quality processes and department efficiency.

Work Environment

This role is primarily lab-based, with approximately 90% of the time spent in the QC laboratory and about 10% on the production floor. The lab environment emphasizes cleanliness and organization, with a strong focus on maintaining safe and orderly workstations and retain storage areas. Appropriate laboratory attire is required. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elk Grove Village, IL.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Elk Grove Village,IL.
