Evenly is a healthcare technology company in Bethesda, Maryland. For years we delivered orthodontic care directly to patients. Now we're turning that operating experience into AI-powered software that lets general dentists offer clear aligner treatment, with orthodontists overseeing each case remotely. The platform is live, dental practices use it every day, and it's the center of the company's next phase.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You'll be our first engineering hire. You'll own the product technically: what gets built, in what order, and to what standard. You'll set the roadmap and priorities with the leadership team.

You won't start from a blank page. Our Head of Product built v1 with AI coding agents, and it runs real clinical workflows today. It proves the product works. Your job is to make it production-grade and take it much further. You'll work directly with the person who built it, so you'll always know why it was built the way it was.

This role has the scope of a founding engineer: full technical ownership, direct contact with users, and a straight line between what you ship and whether the business works.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

• End-to-end architecture, development, testing, deployment, and production operations.

• Hardening a working, AI-built codebase with testing, CI/CD, observability, security, and reliability.

• Integrations with third-party systems, including intraoral scanners, messaging, payments, and other healthcare APIs.

• AI features built on modern LLMs, including prompt engineering, structured outputs, evaluations, and model selection.

• HIPAA compliance and the security of software that handles patient data.

• Working with dentists and our clinical team to understand their workflows and turn feedback into product.

HOW WE BUILD

We're an AI-first engineering organization. We believe modern AI tools let an exceptional engineer do what used to take a whole team.

The ideal candidate:

• Uses Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar tools every day.

• Has strong opinions about what makes AI-assisted development work and keeps experimenting.

• Owns every line of code, whether an AI or a person wrote it.

• Does their best work with a lot of autonomy.

WHERE WE WORK

This role is on-site at our Bethesda office. We think the first engineer on a new product should sit next to the people running it.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, including production ownership.

• A track record of shipping products or major features from concept through deployment.

• Daily use of AI coding agents in your development work.

• Strong product judgment and the ability to turn business goals into shipped features.

• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical people.

• Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred

• Experience in healthcare technology or HIPAA-regulated environments.

• Experience building LLM-powered products, including evals, structured outputs, or agentic workflows.

• Experience integrating production third-party APIs such as payments, messaging, or EHR systems.

• Startup or zero-to-one product experience.
