Chief of Staff to the President
$190k - $240kLeague of Conservation Voters
Positions Reporting to this Position: Director of Board Relations and Special Assistant to the President; VP for Planning and Strategic Initiatives Location: Washington, DC Union Position: No Job Classification Level: M-V Salary Range (depending on experience): $190,000-$240,000 Position Overview For over half a century, the League of Conservation Voters, Inc. (“LCV”), has led the charge for clean air, clean water, public lands, healthy communities and a sustainable planet for all. LCV has built political power and infrastructure at the intersection of climate policy and electoral strategy—advancing environmental protections, electing pro‑environment lawmakers and aligning action across an integral multi‑state network. We envision a world in which tackling the climate crisis, confronting environmental injustice and strengthening our democracy leads to cleaner and healthier communities, good, well‑paying jobs and a just, equitable and sustainable future for all. LCV is hiring a Chief of Staff to the President to serve as a trusted, strategic partner to the President, Executive Team and Board of Directors. The Chief will help ensure the organization operates with clarity and alignment, support executive decision making, and strengthen cross‑departmental coordination. The Chief of Staff will orchestrate the conversations, systems and processes that leverage the time and talent of the President in service of the strategic plan. The Chief will anticipate needs and understand the President’s perspective to best support, prepare and represent him and ensure his portfolio is prioritized and organized. Under the leadership of the President, the Chief of Staff will play a key role in spearheading and coalescing the Executive Team. The Chief will help create a culture that is collaborative, inclusive, aligned, driving toward our strategic goals and “holding the whole” of the organization. The Chief will enable a strong partnership between the board, President, and Executive Team, ensuring alignment to organizational priorities. In addition, the Chief will lead the strategic planning process every four years, collaborating with the President, Board and senior leaders across the organization. This is a senior‑level role for someone with exceptional judgment, emotional intelligence and the ability to bring order to complexity. The ideal candidate is someone who earns trust quickly, communicates with precision and care and finds genuine satisfaction in making a leader and an organization more effective. This position is classified as “Regular Hybrid Work,” and is required to work in the Washington, DC office three days a week, ideally based around the President’s schedule. General Working Conditions Operate in a professional office or home office environment and routinely use standard office equipment including, but not limited to, computers, phones, photocopiers and audiovisual systems. Largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using electronic platforms. Key Responsibilities Support of the President Partner with the President to ensure his time and output is focused on organizational priorities as defined by the strategic plan. Ensure that the President is well prepared for meetings, travel and events by coordinating staff input, overseeing the preparation of briefings and materials and keeping a forward‑looking eye on the calendar. Manage information flow on the President’s activities to relevant staff. Serve as a trusted thought partner on decisions that are sensitive, complex, or high‑stakes — bringing candor, good judgment and discretion. Serve as a proxy for the President in meetings, conversations and decision points as needed, representing his perspective and priorities with credibility and care. Lead internal initiatives as requested by the President. Draft communications on behalf of the President. Executive Team In partnership with the President, define Executive Team responsibilities, values and approach; facilitate a collaborative, inclusive and supportive team culture. Drive and align priorities across the Executive Team and ensure strong collaboration and execution to maximize impact. Work with the Executive Team to ensure realistic implementation of plans against strategic objectives. Develop meeting agendas with input from team members and other key staff. Ensure information flows from the Executive Team to all levels of organizational leadership. Board Management Enable a strong partnership with the LCV and LCVEF boards, working with the Board Chair, President and relevant board members to set direction and alignment. Prepare the right materials and conversations, coordinate the flow of information and ensure board engagement connects clearly to organizational priorities. Create agendas for board meetings, calls and retreats; ensure boards receive timely and relevant information and updates. Ensure board committees are well functioning by coordinating and collaborating with relevant executive team members. Strategic Planning & Execution Lead the strategic planning process, typically every four years. Lead annual priority setting process based on the four‑year strategic plan. Collect and analyze metrics against the strategic plan goals. Internal Leadership Manage executive office staff. Oversee staff meetings and executive retreats. Organizational Values & Integrity Demonstrate leadership in the organization’s long‑term process to advance racial justice and equity in every facet of the organization. Ensure organizational values are reflected in the planning and goal‑setting processes. Support efforts to create an organizational culture that is inclusive, respectful, and equitable. Essential Qualifications At least 12 years of professional experience in advocacy, political or campaign organizations, government or philanthropy, including a minimum of five years in a senior leadership role. Demonstrated experience serving as a thought partner to a senior leader, preferably a CEO or Executive Director, in a complex organization. Significant experience working across an organization with similar complexity, budget and staff size to achieve ambitious goals. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience as a programmatic leader in a nonprofit, advocacy or political organization. Experience on electoral or advocacy campaigns. Experience leading senior leadership teams, including defining roles, processes and values. What You Bring to the Role Strategic Judgment You know how to assess a situation quickly, weigh competing considerations and offer sound guidance. You're comfortable operating in gray areas; you create clarity rather than waiting for it and you have a strong bias toward action. You know when to decide, when to elevate or slow down and ask additional questions. Leadership & Relationship Building You are comfortable managing up, down and across through influence rather than authority. You know how to build genuine relationships at every level of an organization — and people trust you to represent them and their work fairly. You read people and rooms well. You know when to push, when to listen and how to balance urgency with sustainability. Excellence in Implementation You are the person who notices what’s missing, follows up without being asked and brings the same rigor to a small task as a big one. You have a proven ability to wrangle complexity, align stakeholders and deliver results even when priorities are shifting, all while staying anchored to the President’s priorities. Communication & Relationship Management You are a clear, direct communicator who can represent the President with credibility and care. You can represent someone else’s voice and priorities faithfully and well. You understand that trust is foundational to this role — and you treat it accordingly. Emotional Intelligence & Adaptability You bring self‑awareness, humility and empathy to your work. You bring energy and steadiness in equal measure, and you don’t rattle easily when priorities shift or things get hard. You understand how to read a room, manage complex interpersonal and power dynamics, build trust while holding others accountable and aren’t afraid to disagree. Racial Justice & Equity Competencies You have a demonstrated awareness of how one’s life experiences influence one’s personal attitudes, biases and assumptions. You bring a demonstrated commitment to continual learning and the ability to successfully deliver culturally responsive services. You are committed to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. You understand how environmental issues intersect with racial, economic and social inequities in the U.S. and have a passion for working to dismantle systemic racism. Physical Demands You are comfortable operating in a professional office environment and routinely using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and audiovisual systems. This position is largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Conditions You have the ability and willingness to travel 10‑15% of the time. This position is based in Washington, D.C. Equal Opportunity Employer Statement LCV is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to a racially just, equitable and inclusive workplace.
