INTRO TO DEPARTMENT:
Penn Arts and Sciences (SAS) forms the foundation of thescholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of theworld's leading research universities. SAS Facilities Planning & Operations provides servicesin project coordination, building administration, and operationalservices to the various departments within the School of Arts andSciences. The SAS Capital Project and Design Team implementsprojects including small office renovations, new and replacementfurniture spec and purchase, facilities infrastructure renewal,comprehensive suite upgrades, multi-million dollar lab renovations,rental space updates and new building construction. SAS iscurrently implementing a multi-year capital program includingprojects up to $500M+ in individual project value.DUTIES:
For Both Director C and Director D Levels: Reporting directly to the Vice Dean of Finance and Administration,this leadership role will oversee the design and project managementgroup in the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) Project Managementthat implements projects including small office renovations, newand replacement furniture spec and purchase, facilitiesinfrastructure renewal, comprehensive suite upgrades, multi-milliondollar lab renovations, rental space updates and new buildingconstruction. This position will be responsible for establishingbudgets, project initiation and track determination, designmanagement, and implementation of various types and scales ofcapital and non-capital new construction, renovation, and furnitureupgrade projects in SAS. This position will work in partnershipwith the SAS Director of Facilities Operations to ensure acohesive, collaborative and consistent approach to facilitiesmanagement in SAS. This position will also work in partnership withFRES at various levels to ensure a cohesive, collaborative andconsistent approach to facilities management in SAS. Director will be responsible to work with the relevant partners atPenn Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES), clients in SAS,and other persons as needed to ensure that projects run on-time, onbudget and with a high degree of professionalism. The Director will be responsible for managing, improving, anddocumenting all internal processes and procedures associated withthe implementation of capital and non-capital projects in SAS FPOand ensuring that sustainability goals are incorporated into eachproject. The position and associated staff serve to partner with,manage expectations of, and represent the clients (faculty, staff,students, SAS) on each project assigned. The Director will also beresponsible for all furniture projects and ensure new andreplacement furniture requests are processed appropriately. TheDirector will be responsible for implementing space coordinationprocesses and will lead, in close partnership with the Vice Dean,overall space planning efforts for SAS. For the Senior Director of Facilities Planning & Operations (Director D Level): The Senior Director oversees facilities operations, includingmaintenance, utilities coordination, safety, and continuity, acrossowned and leased assets, and directs and develops amultidisciplinary staff of 20+ across operations, planning, design,and project delivery. The position serves as the primary liaison to academic and centralleadership, advising on capital priorities, infrastructure risk,and long-term asset strategy, and is responsible for preparing andpresenting capital investment analyses and project updates tosenior leadership in support of institutional governance. TheSenior Director coordinates with external partners, includingconsultants, regulators, and local agencies, to support projectdelivery and compliance, and integrates sustainability, energyefficiency, and resilience strategies into capital planning andfacilities operations.QUALIFICATIONS:
Director of Capital Projects (Director C Level): BA/BS required, Master's degree preferred. Education related toArchitecture, Construction Management, Design, or related fieldrequired plus 7-10 years of experience (or equivalent combinationof education and experience). Experience leading capital projects required. Preferredexperience in research laboratory design and/or MEP within anacademic environment. Extensive experience collaborating withFacilities Division of large organization and other campus partnerswould be ideal. Demonstrated project management and organization skills withthe ability to think high-level and execute on the details. Provenability to exercise good judgment, take initiative, and makeindependent decisions. Strong planning and organizationalcapabilities along with problem solving skills are required. Ability to work with and communicate effectively at all levelswithin the organization from senior management totechnicians. Ability to move multiple projects forward at the same timewhile remaining on point with the school's mission Demonstrated ability to work independently and resolveissues/emergencies. Available during non-traditional work hours includingevenings/nights and weekends. This position requires on-campus presence at least 75% of thetime. The position involves frequent walking, including walking forextended periods of time indoors or outdoors. For the Senior Director of Facilities Planning & Operations(Director D Level): Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years of experience or equivalentcombination of education and experience required. Master's degreeand 7-10 years of management, business and/or academic experiencepreferred. Strong management & leadership skills and experiencerequired. Candidates must have experience in building andmaintaining relationships with stakeholders, leading teams, anddeveloping organization-wide strategies.
