POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE

Position Summary A Police Officer Trainee is an entry‑level, non‑sworn position in the Stockton Police Department. Incumbents attend the Basic Peace Officer Academy and must pass all required training to receive the Basic Peace Officer Standard and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certificate before becoming eligible for a sworn Police Officer role. The position emphasizes community‑based policing, collaboration with residents, and problem‑solving. Key Responsibilities Attend and successfully complete the Basic Peace Officer Academy. Pass all physical, written, and investigative examinations required by the Academy and by the Department. Comply with the Department’s Physical Ability Test (PAT) and PELLETB written test. Maintain a primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall to respond to emergencies. Adhere to all Department policies, procedures, and standards. Qualifications High school diploma or GED; some college coursework preferred. Age 20 at time of application; age 21 at appointment. Valid California Class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Successful background investigation, including polygraph, psychological assessment, and DOJ fingerprint clearance. Pass physical examination: 20/100 uncorrected, 20/30 corrected vision; color blindness disqualifies; hearing normal 5/5. Physically able to meet the Academy physical requirements described below. Willingness to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and to drive. Ready to work full‑time immediately after Academy completion. Physical Requirements Drag a 165‑lb. weighted dummy for 32 feet. Scale a 6‑ft. solid wall. Scale a 6‑ft. chain‑link fence. Complete a 99‑yd obstacle course that may include: 3–6 inch simulated curbs. 34‑inch high saw horse. 500‑yd run. Benefits City pays full employee share of health, dental, and vision plan contributions. Life insurance of $50,000 plus AD&D for qualifying units. Retirement through CalPERS and optional 457/401(a) deferred compensation. Accrued vacation up to 189 hours per year based on tenure. Paid sick leave and 14 public holidays. Uniform allowance of $950 per year.
