A Faith That Does Justice is an interfaith organization that challenges people to experience God by living their faith intentionally in service to others. We do this by showing how unjust societal structures marginalize people and by acting to help those in need. Our vision is people intentionally living their faith in action. Our programs fall under our two key strategic areas of focus: Acting to help those in need with a particular emphasis on immigrant populations. Showing how unjust systems marginalize people and encouraging our followers to put their faiths into action to address injustice. Our programs include: Fireside Chats – We explore issues of current social justice interest. The Weekly Word – A weekly email that gives voice to different faith leaders across the country who discuss social justice issues from a faith perspective that reaches more than 4,000 people. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program – We provide free virtual and in-person instruction for English language learners in greater Boston in collaboration with Jewish Vocational Service (JVS), which has established the standard in Boston for these learning experiences. From 2018 through the end of 2023, we enrolled more than 600 students in the program. Grab & Go meal program – A food preparation and distribution program for people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in downtown Boston. Spanish Mass – A gathering for the Spanish‑speaking community for mass and dinner for immigrants who do not speak English. Newsletter – Includes a weekly spiritual reflection by qualified theologians as well as social justice and event news circulated weekly by email to more than 4,000 followers. Continual learning opportunities – Virtual connection to our subscribers, including increased use of “live” and pre‑recorded videos on social media. Who Are We Seeking A Faith That Does Justice is seeking volunteer Teachers and Substitute Teachers who are committed to helping speakers of other languages learn English. They will teach students to communicate in English with those they encounter in daily living and to use their acquired language to improve their employment opportunities. Why teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)? Use teaching to serve social justice and build your own teaching skills. Help adult learners in vulnerable populations develop the language skills needed to obtain employment and to live successfully in this country. Through its interfaith mission to foster meaningful relationships and build solidarity with immigrants, the ESOL program of A Faith That Does Justice creates an expanded community network for teachers as well as students. Course Description 15 weeks long, two days of 2-hour sessions per week Class sessions occur on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm ET to 8:30 pm ET or Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 am ET to 11:30 am ET Classes are virtual using Zoom Approximately 10 students grouped by proficiency levels (Beginner & Intermediate) Students are adults Teachers are supported by ESOL Student Relationship Managers (mentors) Teacher Commitment and Expectations Teach for the entire 15-week cycle Adapt provided curriculum to the needs of students Be present and prepared for all sessions Be able to effectively host a Zoom meeting and to use Zoom controls such as chat, screen sharing, break‑out rooms, etc. Is this right for me? Teachers should speak English as a native but do not need to be bilingual as classes are taught in English. While prior teaching experience is preferred, it is not required. We seek teachers who are patient, engaging and dedicated to the mission of empowerment through education. Training is available to refresh or teach some technical skills. AFTDJ is an interfaith program; members of all faiths and beliefs are welcome as both students and teachers. Full Time Teacher vs. Substitute Full Time Teacher is expected to teach class twice a week for the 15-week cycle. Substitute Teacher is expected to be able to step in for Full Time Teacher on short notice in cases where the Full Time Teacher is not able to make a class.
