School Counselor

To work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, staff, administrators and community members to ensure the social-emotional health of students and assist with problem solving, peer relationships and lead with regard to crisis management. To comply with state and federal laws and regulations germane to school counseling.

Job Qualifications

1. Valid Ohio teaching certificate/license and teaching experience preferred 2. Valid Ohio school counselor certificate/license 3. Good written and verbal communication skills 4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable

Essential Duties

1. To effectively implement the district's comprehensive school counseling program plan 2. To provide information and counsel students regarding educational, career and personal social concerns. 3. To be accessible help supervise and to interact with students daily on an informal basis in the halls, cafeteria, etc., and by scheduled appointments. 4. To keep abreast of changes in educational requirements and development of career opportunities and disseminate this information to students. 5. To help students identify their abilities, achievements and interests through career and college readiness activities and the use of the Naviance system 6. To interpret results of assessments to students, parents and teachers and to make recommendations for further assessments if deemed necessary. 7. To provide group and crisis counseling services to meet students' needs and to conduct self-harm assessments as needed. 8. To provide individual and group counseling to students as the need arises. 9. To provide or initiate parent conferences as the need arises. 10.To be knowledgeable about and to coordinate the use of available school and community resources. 11.To manage 504 student cases including initial evaluations and reviews as assigned 12.To represent the respective building as team members in initial evaluation team reports, reevaluations of special education students and Individualized Education Program as well as for 504s(IEP) conferences, as assigned by the building principal or assistant director of student services. 13.To provide placement services to students in making effective transitions from one level of education to another and from school to employment. To assist with college and scholarship applications 14.To project a positive school image in the community. 15.To keep the community current on school counseling activities. 16.To effectively communicate with students, staff, parents and the general public in written and verbal form. 17.To demonstrate effective active listening skills, and be well versed in counseling theories and techniques 18.To provide accurate scheduling information to the building administrators. To make student schedule changes as necessary and keep all related records up to date. 19.To process materials for the enrollment center as needed. 20.To compile information regarding class sizes and balance classes upon request. 21.To maintain accurate student cumulative records. 22.To assist with and/or supervise the building testing program. 23.To serve as a liaison between the school and outside agencies working with Northwest students. 24.To provide orientation sessions for new students and to follow up with them on a regular basis. 25.To assist classroom teachers in meeting the personal and educational needs of their students. To participate in team meetings as requested. 26.To assist students in selecting appropriate classes for their career pathway and goals. 27.To work with students who are having academic difficulties and provide information to parents. 28.To plan and implement special events or programs such as Career Day, Financial Aid Night, awards assemblies and high school visits. 29.To maintain a professional appearance and demeanor. 30.To work cooperatively with other members of the department and staff. 31.To carry out all duties in a timely manner. 32.To perform other such duties as may be assigned by a building administrator or administrator for curriculum.
