Salary Range: $90,000-$105,000
Position Summary:
Primary functions include providing the highest quality of veterinary care and client education on a daily basis, performing spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, medical assessments, treatments and procedures to improve and ensure the health of Tulsa SPCA animals and animals belonging to members of the public when accessing our public services.
The Veterinarian is responsible for the daily care of all surgical patients, ensuring all staff members adhere to proper care of patients. Position will include high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgery and include vaccination or preventative care clinics.
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
Primary Accountabilities:
Achieve Organizational Results
- Provide veterinary medical care at Tulsa SPCA.
- Perform spay/neuter surgeries – 40%
- Perform dentals/other surgeries – 10%
- Perform low-cost, public vaccination clinics weekly – 40%
- Shelter medicine and emergency care – 10%
- Use/make evidence based medicine, treatments and diagnoses
- Stay up to date on current research to provide excellent, prompt and current treatment regimens
- Maintain proper storage, recordkeeping, and dispensing of controlled substances in compliance with DEA and state regulations.
- Work with Director of Clinic Servies to develop protocols to ensure a clean, healthy environment is maintained
- Work with other staff to develop and implement program goals, objectives and outcome measurements that are consistent with the long-term strategic plan of the shelter
- Promote and support Fear Free and low-stress animal handling practices across all departments.
- Coach and mentor staff and volunteers on the day-to-day job requirements/expectations
- Work with public/staff/volunteers
- Help staff achieve a better understanding of the medical needs of animals
- Help staff and volunteers grow in their knowledge of recognizing common shelter diseases
- Daily responsibilities and delegations are communicated to appropriate staff
- All computer and hard copy documentation is performed within 24 hours
- Educate staff in appropriate, skilled and humane animal handling techniques
- Professional and mutually beneficial relationships with partners are maintained
Staff Leadership and Direction
- Provide excellent customer service to clients
- Work collaboratively with the executive and leadership team to ensure shelter goals are achieved
- Assist in fostering a workplace that results in the development of a high performing team of professionals and staff.
- Resolve conflicts, and ensure that all assistants perform their functions in a manner consistent with organizational policies, procedures, and best practices associated with their respective disciplines.
External Relationships
- Contribute to the success of the Tulsa SPCA as a whole. Working with others on executive and leadership team(s)
- Assist as necessary with any public relations and community education/outreach activities
Internal Relationships
- Promote positive, collaborative relationships between Tulsa SPCA departments
- Collaborate with other staff to coordinate training for new hires and volunteers
- Work with Clinic Manager and Cruelty Investigator on cruelty cases
- Meet regularly with others on the executive and leadership team(s) to review procedures, reports, problems and discuss new strategies.
Compliance and Accreditation
- Be currently licensed and maintain an Oklahoma Veterinary Medical License
- Must hold a current DEA license
- Practice ethical Veterinary Medicine at all times
- Comply with the Oklahoma Veterinary Practice Act
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory, safety, security and operational standards related to animal care and the practice of Veterinary Medicine with respect to healthcare, daily maintenance, impounding, behavior modification/enrichment and euthanasia – including limiting the practice of Veterinary Medicine to licensed Veterinarians
- Ensure all animal care services performed through the Tulsa SPCA meet or exceed all best practices and professional standards, and are consistent with client expectations
- Stay abreast of current animal welfare issues, regulations, standards, best practices, etc. as well as the changing needs of the community
- Maintain professional competency through continuing education and professional development.
Stewardship
- Act as a principal steward of the organization's resources. Ensure that all of the Tulsa SPCA's resources are utilized properly, legally & ethically, and that all those entrusted to manage or represent the affairs of the organization are properly directed and highly effective.
- Uphold the mission, values, and principles of the organization at all times. Ensure all business endeavors and relationships as well as the individual performance of each direct report are consistent with the organization's mission, values, policies and goals.
Primary Tasks and Duties
- Perform spay/neuter surgeries (shelter animals and the public)
- Perform low-cost, public vaccination clinics as needed
- Train and teach staff and volunteers where appropriate
- Act as medical spokesperson for the Tulsa SPCA with the media
- Perform routine and emergency veterinary medical care
- Work with staff to ensure that all duties are carried out
Position Requirements:
- Physical Environment
- Work is both indoors and outside and can be exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and a variety of conditions including humidity and dust.
- Travel to area events/locations in year-round weather conditions is possible.
- Use of computer, keyboard, telephone, copy machines, and fax machines.
- Will be exposed to animal smells, fumes, chemicals, cleaning supplies, airborne particles, parasites, pests, zoonotic diseases and sharp objects.
- Will work with and be exposed to a variety of animals (some may be sick, injured and/or vicious) and animal waste.
- Animal bites and/or scratches are possible.
- Must be able to lift (to waist height) and carry 50 lbs.
- Repetitive movements such as bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, standing, and other similar activities are required.
- Ability to hear, talk, use hand dexterity required. Additionally, specific visual abilities, including close vision and ability to adjust focus is required.
- Noise level is moderate to high.

- DVM degree required with active and current Oklahoma license
