Job Purpose

As a Field Service Mechanic B, you are an intermediate-level technician who has developed a solid foundation of mechanical knowledge and is expanding into more complex diagnostics and repairs in the field. Field Service Mechanic B's have mastered the foundational operating procedures at the branch level and are progressing toward mastery of regional and national standards. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Field Service Mechanic B is to utilize their growing mechanical expertise to support fleet maintenance operations at customer job sites, ensuring Herc Rentals equipment remains on the rental 'ready line'. This goal is achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program executed from a service truck, while mentoring Field Service Mechanic C-level technicians.

What you will do...

Preventative Maintenance (Field)

• Maintain PM schedules for Herc-owned fleet at active job sites.

• Independently perform oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication from the service truck.

• Replace oil/fuel filters, water pumps, thermostats, and radiators onsite.

• Manage coolant levels, flush systems, and maintain hose quality.

• Perform DPF/DEF system maintenance at the job site.

• Conduct visual/operational inspections of engines, belts, hoses, and major systems.

• Inspect for oil leaks, correct fuel type, and fluid levels per OEM recommendations.

Intermediate Diagnostics & Repairs (Field)

• Diagnose/repair cooling systems; identify electronic and mechanical problems onsite.

• Test engine cooling and fuel systems (lines, leaks).

• Troubleshoot/repair electrical systems-wiring, connectors, control units-from the service truck.

• Replace faulty turbos, alternators, and sensors.

• Diagnose pressure loss, overheating, and sluggish movement on aerial equipment.

• Use computerized tools to trace electrical faults, connections, switches, sensors, and safety interlocks.

• Replace hoses, hydraulic pumps, motors, wiring, and sensors.

• Replace guardrails, platforms, and outriggers; replace aerial lift leveling components.

• Perform annual aerial inspections; service emission control components (DPF).

Intermediate Electrical Tasks (Field)

• Inspect starter motor, solenoid, and ignition switch; check cranking amperage and abnormal noises.

• Inspect wiring harnesses for fraying, cracks, exposed wires, or overheating; replace as needed.

• Inspect lighting wiring/switches and cabin for moisture ingress or electrical damage.

• Inspect/test relays and circuitry; replace faulty components.

• Inspect/recalibrate overvoltage protection systems and indicator lights.

• Inspect/test voltage regulators and sensors; replace if faulty.

• Verify firmware/software updates using truck-carried tools.

• Read and apply electrical schematics to support diagnostics.

Work Orders, Reporting & Mentorship (Field)

• Enter/review work orders and order parts via fleet management system from the field.

• Assist shop lead with damage estimates, repairs, and documentation onsite.

• Produce detailed service reports and repair logs per visit.

• Recondition/replace heavy equipment parts; diagnose wear/tear onsite.

• Assist training Field Service Mechanic C techs under shop lead direction.

• Keep service truck and inventory clean and organized.

• Follow field procedures, protocols, and safety requirements; other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to operate a fully equipped service truck and be able to obtain a FMCSA regulated Driver Qualification File (DQF)

• Ownership of sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services.

• Ability to drive/operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment.

• Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.

• Demonstrated proficiency in all Field Service Mechanic C-level tasks.

• Working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems; ability to read schematics.

• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and job site environments.

Skills

• Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment.

• Solid and proven computer skill set to enter and review work orders from the field.

• Ability to understand detailed technical schematics, owner manuals, and product warning labels.

• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with customers, job site supervisors, and all levels of the company.

• Interpersonal skills and teamwork in a field environment.

• Attention to detail and strong situational awareness on active job sites.

• Solid written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong understanding of time management and the ability to prioritize multiple service calls.

• Works and communicates effectively with all employees of the branch and all levels of the company.

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as required

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods

• Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, and reaching overhead

• Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, and stoop for extended periods

Pay Range: $30 - $35 per hour
