Description of Work Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position is the Officer-in-charge (OIC) and is responsible for the custody and security of the facility and the safety of the general public. Planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a close custody facility. Following security policies and procedures, assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility. Serving as shift supervisor, supervisor of Correctional Lieutenant III’s, and may serve as Officer-in-Charge. Conducting frequent inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is maintained, and that assignments are being carried out effectively. Implementing disciplinary measures with offenders and employees on minor infractions of rules. Investigating offender complaints and making reports of such actions to higher level officials. Working to prevent or resolve disorders such as assaults, riots, fires, and escapes. Preparing reports on offenders pertaining to their behavior, attitudes, and work records for use on the offender classification committee. Organizing and conducting training programs for employees, including on-the-job training. About the Division of Institutions The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel. About Southern Correctional Institution Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, North Carolina and houses up to 700 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.
