This position serves as a Medical Laboratory Technologist I in the Serology Laboratory of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health. The primary function is to perform routine and reference diagnostic testing on serum and other bodily fluids to detect antibodies and antigens for various infectious diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, and rubella. The role operates within a high-volume, CLIA-regulated laboratory environment and supports public health surveillance efforts. The technologist utilizes automated and semi-automated instrumentation, adheres to quality assurance protocols, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams. This position also provides consultation to healthcare professionals and supports emergency response activities as needed.

Key duties include:

• Perform clinical laboratory testing on serum and bodily fluids following standard operating procedures for detecting HIV, hepatitis, rubella, and other infectious agents.
• Operate and maintain a variety of automated and semi-automated laboratory instruments used in serologic testing.
• Document and evaluate quality control and quality assurance activities in compliance with federal, state, and laboratory regulations.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for specimen tracking, data entry, and results reporting.
• Conduct instrument maintenance, calibration, and basic troubleshooting per manufacturer protocols and laboratory guidelines.
• Participate in test verification, validation studies, and other quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide technical consultation and testing guidance to physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, and other laboratorians.
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and inventory of supplies and reagents according to safety and procedural standards.
• Support emergency response operations by performing testing or other assigned duties during public health emergencies, including weekends and holidays.
• Cross-train in other virology sections to ensure operational redundancy and continuity of testing services.

Salary Grade Range: $58,265 - $87,396

Must meet CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a laboratory performing high-complexity testing. Candidates must attach a copy of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to qualify for consideration.

Physical requirements:

• An occupational medical assessment may be required to determine your ability to safely work with biological, chemical, or radiological hazards.
• This position may also require periodic medical screenings to confirm that safety practices are effectively preventing occupational injury or illness. All costs associated with obtaining occupational health services are covered by NCSLPH.
• Works frequently with infectious disease agents that require the use of personal protective equipment.
• Uses laboratory equipment requiring the ability to manipulate items with fingers, the ability to grasp, and the ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.
