Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician and in keeping with unit-specific standards, you will provide patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients and assist members of the healthcare team. As an integral member of the patient care team, you will serve both internal and external customers including patients, nurses, physicians and other colleagues who support the delivery of care and services. I. Major Responsibilities Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients (e.g., changes in skin condition, vital signs and/or mental status). Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee. Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizing interventions to de-escalate patients and, if unsuccessful, participates in restraints in accordance with training and education directed. Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals and nourishment. Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics. Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall prevention devices/strategies as directed, and following Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient. Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oxymetry) and measures and records patients' height and weight. Performs EKGs, Point of Care (POC) tests, and bladder scanning according to hospital standards; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab. Perform phlebotomy in designated locations. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs by acting as a source of information and building positive rapport and relationships. Performs unit-specific procedures such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking equipment status, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies. Assists RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures, preparing patients, setting up equipment and supplies (e.g., intravenous and hemodynamic lines), using sterile technique when indicated, and providing emotional support. Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake; sets up full-strength tube feeding solutions and refills supplies as directed; empties and records output from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems; performs ostomy care on established patients. Answers telephone using proper etiquette, takes and relays messages, and utilizes intra-department communication systems such as pagers and intercoms. Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment. Stays current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and responding to UMMHC e-mails regularly. The PCT III must fit into one of these specialties: Unit Secretary: Functions as unit secretary assisting with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures on at least 5 shifts (40 hours) every 6 months. Responsibilities include maintaining logs, organizing patient care charts, and entering or retrieving medical information from electronic medical record systems. Remote Video Monitoring: Continuously observes multiple patients using the remote video monitoring system in the Emergency Department, Step Down Unit, ICU, Dialysis, Spine Procedure Room, Endoscopy, Neurointerventional Radiology, Angiography, and Radiology Short Stay. Telemetry Certified & Step-Down Unit – Harrington: PCT III is cross-trained in phlebotomy and telemetry competencies, as well as unit clerk duties, and may be assigned to higher acuity areas such as the Step-Down Unit. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed. Utilizes Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education – Required: Minimum of a high school education or GED. Current Basic Life Support certification. Experience/Skills – Required: Demonstrated competency attainment in the PCT II level or 1 year of acute‑care/hospital experience or 1 year of EMT/Paramedic experience. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely. Knowledge of medical terminology. Computer skills. Strong interpersonal skills to gather information, build collaborative relationships within the department and across the organization, and provide exceptional service to patients. Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations and ability to seek assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed. Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the above requirements. Department‑specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained by the respective department and attached to the job description. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Position requires indoor patient‑care work with hand dexterity, hearing and vision to follow patient or provider directions, adjust equipment, and observe patient conditions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work involves heavy demand with frequent standing, walking, pushing heavy equipment, and bending.
