PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Role: To provide all functions necessary for nuclear medicine procedures. To provide the best care possible to the patient. "Give them more than they expect". Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

- Performs general Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT and Nuclear Cardiac procedures as directed by physicians. Elicits pertinent information concerning the procedure and the patient's history from the medical chart and the patient. Explains the procedure to the patient. Positions the patient appropriately. Selects the appropriate collimator and acquisition protocol. Cannulates veins for administration of radionucleids or other medication. Monitors the patient's condition during procedures. Completes procedure information on the appropriate forms. Processes the study and send images electronically for the radiologist to review.
- Keeps work area clean, organized, and stocked with supplies necessary for nuclear medicine procedures.
- Performs daily Quality Control Testing. Performs ACR testing and keeps proper documentation per ACR guidelines. Maintains scan, imaging and processing equipment in good conditions.
- Maintains all licenses and documentation requires for the handling and administration of radiopharmaceuticals..
- Performs related work as required.
- Produces the highest quality images possible.
- Maintains all records and licenses required for the handling and administration of radiopharmaceuticals.
- Keeps abreast of current techniques, procedures and policies. Abides by Clinic policies and procedures.
- Maintains professional, considerate and congenial work relationships with patients, staff and the public.
- Keeps equipment and work area clean, organized, well stocked and functioning properly.
- Fulfills continuing education requirements for Kansas, 12 hours per year.
- Experience: Two years to five years of similar or related experience.
- Education: Equivalent to a college degree. A four year BS degree to include: Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry, General Physics, College Algebra and Statistics. Completion of course in Nuclear Medicine Technology approved by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologists; current certification (ARRT) (N) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or (CNMT) with the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologists.
- Interpersonal Skills: The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust. Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the job. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers and others within the organization. Being a team player is essential.
- Other Skills:
- KNOWLEDGE OF: anatomy and physiology to focus the exam on the area of concern; common safety hazards and precautions; safe handling procedures for radioactive materials; nuclear medicine physics and instrumentation to provide the best possible image quality.
- SKILL IN: vein cannulization; recognizing and responding to patient's needs; monitoring the patient's condition during the procedure; maintaining records and recording information; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.
- ABILITY TO: react calmly in emergency situations; communicate clearly; interpret, adapt, and apply established guidelines, yet be flexible to meet the patient's needs; work with general supervision, structuring own work patterns within the general outline, referring unusual situations or problems to the supervisor; maintain quality control standards; and work effectively during periods of stress resulting from patient flow and office demands.
- Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operation and repair of all departmental equipment.
- Lifts and carries items weighing up to 30 pounds; lifts and appropriately positions patients weighing up to 300 pounds.
- Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and review developed films.
- Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, radioactive materials, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
