Job Purpose

Responsible for upholding established standards in tray assembly, decontamination, inspection, containerization, and sterilization of surgical instruments in a consistent and timely manner. Carries out sterilization procedures, assembly, and proper storage of medical supplies and equipment. Works closely with Perioperative staff to ensure sterile instrument sets and equipment are available accurately and on schedule. Contributes to maintaining an efficient and uninterrupted workflow while delivering exceptional customer service. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

Key Responsibilities

Manages the handling and processing of surgical instruments and equipment.

• Requisitions, replenishes, and cleans sterilization equipment and instruments as needed.
• Retrieves and transports soiled equipment and instruments from point of use.
• Organizes, loads, unloads, and cleans equipment and instruments following established protocols.

Oversees and supports the sterilization workflow from start to finish.

• Builds instrument trays, packages, and supply sets and readies all items for sterilization.
• Processes instruments, equipment, and supplies through sterilization cycles; ensures proper handling and storage upon completion.

Conducts biological and chemical indicator testing in compliance with quality assurance protocols.

• Performs routine tray audits to verify accuracy and completeness.
• Collaborates with managers, supervisors, and OR staff to develop and implement service improvement strategies.
• Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of all relevant activities.
• Stays current with new information and applies updated procedures and equipment as introduced.
• Acts as a welcoming and knowledgeable resource for newly onboarded team members.
• Completes education courses and competencies as required and assigned.
• Supports department projects or rotations as requested.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Familiarity with sterilization supplies, instrumentation, and processing equipment.
• Ability to organize, contain, and transport items of varying sizes and weights.
• Understanding of safe handling and disposal practices for hazardous materials and sharps per facility policy.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required.
• Working knowledge of sterilization methods for a wide range of instruments and equipment.
• Proficiency in wrapping and repackaging sterilized items to maintain sterility.
• Ability to operate sterilization equipment and handle instruments correctly.
• Ability to set up and arrange instruments on surgical trays accurately.
• Capability to follow written protocols and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Aptitude for building and sustaining productive working relationships across departments.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team.
• Flexibility to respond appropriately in fast-paced or changing environments.
• Basic computer proficiency sufficient to support documentation and workflow tasks.

Minimum Education Required: High School graduate or GED.

Minimum Experience Required: One year of experience in a sterile processing, central service, or surgical technology role is preferred, or equivalent completion of a related training program.

Additional Qualifications: Required to obtain CRCST within 180 days of hire and required to maintain an active certification throughout employment.
