Safeway Assistant Store Director-Southern Maryland

We are seeking a First Assistant Store Director to lead operations, deliver exceptional customer service, and support the Store Director in all aspects of store management. Key Responsibilities Operate the retail grocery store during the Store Director’s absence, ensuring store performance, cash control, inventory accuracy, and staff management. Track, analyze, and take action to improve store performance by forecasting sales goals and meeting or exceeding established targets. Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor to match sales and productivity guidelines while staying within wage budgets. Support the Store Director in product placement, appearance, and promotional execution, ensuring proper display and in‑stock conditions. Oversee cash handling and accounting procedures, maintaining store security. Prioritize, plan, and coordinate work activities, managing time and resources to meet objectives. Ensure compliance with legal requirements, company policies, and procedures, including safety, sanitation, and wage regulations. Focus on customer satisfaction, ensuring employees provide superior service through best practices and clear communication. Select, train, develop, and manage store employees, providing performance feedback and development opportunities. Maintain professional relationships with union officials and uphold collective bargaining agreements when applicable. Resolve complex or difficult situations with peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers, preserving positive working relationships. Motivate staff to achieve common objectives, serving as a role model and fostering a positive workplace culture. Perform other management duties as necessary to keep the store functioning effectively at all times. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of one year as an assistant manager responsible for a department/team, or two years as a department manager within a multi‑department retail or service operation. High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred. Strong customer service and supervisory skills. Solid understanding of overall store operations. Proven leadership abilities. Capacity to use hands, arms, legs, and feet for sustained action (e.g., walking around the store, stocking). Ability to stand 100% of the shift and work in a fast‑paced environment. Travel May be required to travel for training, corporate programs, focus groups, or to assist other stores when necessary. Schedules With many stores operating 24 hours per day, applicants must be willing to work a variety of shifts, long hours, nights, holidays, and weekends. Days off during the work week are rarely consecutive. Pay Transparency The pay range is $68,000 to $104,000, with starting rates varying by location, experience, qualifications, and any applicable collective bargaining agreement.
