Staff Embedded Software Engineer

Abbott seeks a Staff Embedded Software Engineer for its Diabetes Care Division in Alameda, California. The role involves designing, developing, and maintaining embedded firmware for innovative glucose-monitoring sensor technology and related products, with independent responsibility for software delivery, verification, and compliance with FDA guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Lead embedded software development, verification, and validation; ensure on-time delivery of high-quality products within budget
- Design and implement firmware in current programming languages with practical embedded C experience
- Develop detailed design specifications, test cases, and procedures; analyze and document results
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software problems; provide strategic recommendations for future development
- Support FDA-compliant Design Control procedures, hazard/risk analysis, and root-cause investigations
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent; Master's degree preferred
- 8–15 years of software engineering experience, including some management exposure
- Expert proficiency in C, C++, C#, Python, and embedded C development
- Strong knowledge of development tools, debuggers, unit test frameworks, and source control systems
- Experience with software testing, SDLC processes, and structured design methodologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated technical proficiency, creativity, and independent problem-solving ability
