If you have a background in this field, as well as a passion for customer and patient experience, we want to hear from you.This class is accountable for providing laboratory testing services to the hospital and community, primarily in the areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation. This position will work in the Microbiology and Serology Labs at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction from the division Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Manager or Department Head.SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May exercise technical and functional supervision over technical and administrative support staff.SCHEDULE: Full-time 40 hours per week, primarily days, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, rotating weekends and holidays as required, may work evening and night shifts to accommodate departmental needs per contract, 30-minute unpaid meal break, may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as required in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or work outside the normal assigned duties during an incident and/or emergency.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Conducts bacteriological, immunological and serological examinations of blood, urine, gastric contents, spinal, amniotic fluid and other body fluids, exudates and transudates May obtain blood specimens from clients for examinations May work in other disciplines of the lab Performs general laboratory maintenance including preparing reagents and solutionsPerforms antimicrobial susceptibility testing/level determinations, antibody titters and antigen detection to aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases Reports test results; may interpret tests Checks specimen labels for appropriateness/accuracy Performs florescence polarization and immunoassay Keeps records and inventoryAssists in preparing the department monthly reportMaintains patient confidentiality Implements and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenanceParticipates in training of residents, students, fellows Performs other duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITY:Considerable knowledge of chemistry, hematology, biology, bacteriology, microbiology, serology, urinalysis and radioimmunoassayConsiderable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including computersKnowledge of standard clinical laboratory procedures including safety practicesKnowledge of scientific methodsInterpersonal, oral and written communication skillsSkill in performing mathematical computationsAbility to work quickly and accurately under stressful conditionsEXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:General Experience:Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, and two (2) years of Medical Technology experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must possess and maintain certification during employment as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or related specialty from the ASCP Board of Certification or other acceptable certifying board.Must pass a visual color sampling test.PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:Bachelor's degree in medical technology.Knowledge of Epic BeakerWORKING CONDITIONS:Incumbents in this class are exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic, and other hazardous substances.Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens and use of a microscope (light or fluorescent).Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and walking.Why UConn HealthUConn Health is a vibrant, integrated academic medical center that is entering an era of unprecedented growth in all three areas of its mission: academics, research, and clinical care.
