Community Outreach Program Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center Department of Neurology Reports to: Serggio Lanata, MD Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology Position Summary The Community Outreach Program (COP), working within the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core of the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), advances community-engaged education and brain health-promoting activities that seek to improve brain health literacy, promote community brain health, and foster dementia awareness among diverse populations. Through this work, we also seek to strengthen relationships between the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center and the communities we serve in ways that promote referrals to our clinic and research programs from underserved and underrepresented communities. Position Description The Academic Coordinator will play a central role in developing, implementing, coordinating, and sustaining community engagement, educational programming, and public-facing communications. The primary purpose of this appointment is to translate current scientific knowledge about brain health, healthy aging, dementia, and related topics into accessible, culturally responsive educational programs and resources for community audiences. The Academic Coordinator will also help develop and maintain a new public-facing website for the Community Outreach Program and lead the Program’s social media communications to expand the reach and accessibility of its educational and outreach activities. Reporting to Serggio Lanata, MD, the Academic Coordinator will collaborate with faculty, trainees, staff, community organizations, healthcare partners, cultural institutions, and public agencies to develop educational initiatives, strengthen community partnerships, coordinate outreach activities, and support effective communication between UCSF and diverse communities through online and printed materials. The incumbent will coordinate public-facing digital communications, including website content and social media, and will use routine program feedback and quality-improvement processes to strengthen programming. The incumbent will not design, conduct, or participate in research as part of this position. The Academic Coordinator will help establish the Community Outreach Program as a sustainable model for community education, partnership development, science communication, and public service that advances the educational and community engagement missions of the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center and the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Academic Mission The Community Outreach Program serves as the Fein Memory and Aging Center’s platform for translating advances in dementia and brain health research into meaningful partnerships with diverse communities. Working closely with the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core of the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, the Program promotes equitable access to brain health education while strengthening community participation in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia research and clinical care. The Community Outreach Program functions as a living laboratory for community-engaged research, in which educational initiatives are systematically designed, implemented, evaluated, and refined to generate evidence that advances the science of dementia education, implementation, science communication, and equitable community engagement. The Academic Coordinator will strengthen this mission by developing innovative educational programs, cultivating sustained community partnerships, coordinating outreach activities, and supporting the dissemination of current scientific knowledge to public audiences through in-person programming and digital communications. The Academic Coordinator will help develop the Community Outreach Program’s new website and lead its social media communications. Programming and communications will be refined through routine operational feedback, community input, and continuous quality-improvement activities. Major Responsibilities 45% Community-Engaged Educational Program Development Provide leadership in developing, implementing, coordinating, and continuously improving community-engaged educational initiatives focused on dementia, healthy aging, and brain health. Develop culturally responsive curricula, presentations, workshops, educational materials, and science communication strategies informed by current scientific knowledge and community priorities. Adapt educational content for diverse audiences, settings, languages, and levels of health literacy. 25% Community Partnerships, Outreach, and Communications Support the development of partnerships with community organizations, cultural institutions, healthcare organizations, public agencies, and other stakeholders. Coordinate community events, educational forums, outreach activities, and collaborative programming. Maintain regular communication with partners, identify community educational needs and priorities, and promote inclusive participation in Community Outreach Program activities. Help lead the development and ongoing maintenance of a new Community Outreach Program website, including planning, organizing, drafting, and updating public-facing content in collaboration with relevant UCSF partners. Lead the Program’s social media communications, including developing a content strategy, creating and coordinating posts, maintaining an editorial calendar, promoting programs and educational resources, and ensuring communications are accurate, accessible, culturally responsive, and consistent with UCSF policies and branding. 20% Academic Leadership and Strategic Program Development Provide leadership in the continued development and sustainability of the Community Outreach Program. Develop systems and workflows that support program coordination, continuous quality improvement, strategic planning, communication, and collaboration across the Fein Memory and Aging Center and the ADRC. Track routine program activities, participation, reach, digital engagement, and stakeholder feedback for operational and quality-improvement purposes. Identify opportunities to strengthen educational programming, public communications, and interdisciplinary collaboration across education, clinical, and community service missions. 10% Teaching, Mentorship, and Academic Collaboration Develop and coordinate experiential learning opportunities for medical students, residents, Atlantic Fellows, volunteers, and visiting scholars in community engagement, science communication, and culturally responsive educational practice. Provide mentorship related to educational programming and community partnership work. Foster interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, trainees, staff, and community partners. Criteria for Success Success in this role will be demonstrated through sustained leadership in developing a high-quality, trusted, and sustainable program of community-engaged education and outreach that advances the missions of the Community Outreach Program, the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core, the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center. Performance Will Be Evaluated Across The Following Domains Educational Program Leadership Develops and delivers high-quality, community-responsive brain health and dementia education for diverse community audiences. Translates current scientific knowledge into accessible and engaging educational content. Uses community input and routine quality-improvement processes to refine programming. Community Engagement, Partnerships, and Communications Builds and sustains productive, respectful relationships with community organizations and other partners. Coordinates outreach activities and communications that are responsive to community priorities and expand access to brain health education. Develops and maintains effective public-facing communications, including website and social media content, that extend the reach of Community Outreach Program activities and resources. Program Development and Sustainability Develops effective systems, workflows, educational resources, communications platforms, and partnership structures that support the continued growth and sustainability of the Community Outreach Program. Tracks program activities, reach, participation, and stakeholder feedback for operational planning and continuous quality improvement. Advances strategic priorities integrating education, community engagement, digital communications, science communication, and public service. Teaching and Mentorship Provides effective mentorship to students, fellows, volunteers, and other learners participating in community education and outreach. Demonstrates excellence in interdisciplinary collaboration and culturally responsive educational practice. Contributes to the development of learners’ skills in community engagement, science communication, and public education. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in public health, education, communications, neuroscience, psychology, journalism, anthropology, social sciences, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience developing, coordinating, or leading community-engaged educational initiatives. Experience developing educational materials, public-facing communications, curricula, workshops, digital content, or related educational programming. Certificate in brain health, dementia, healthy aging, or a closely related field, or completion of such certification within one year of appointment. Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across academic, clinical, and community settings. Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive and community-engaged educational practice. Strong organizational and project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple activities, partnerships, and communications projects. Preferred Qualifications Experience in dementia, healthy aging, neurology, public health, health education, or science communication. Experience translating scientific or health information for public audiences, including through digital communications. Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with community organizations, healthcare organizations, cultural institutions, or public agencies. Experience coordinating community events, workshops, educational programs, outreach initiatives, website content, or social media communications. Experience mentoring students, trainees, or volunteers. Spanish language proficiency. Experience integrating arts and culture into health education or community-engaged educational initiatives. Appointment This is a temporary academic appointment within the Academic Coordinator series. The position supports the development and delivery of community-engaged education, outreach, partnership development, public-facing communications, and academic service within the Community Outreach Program and the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core of the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The Academic Coordinator will develop and coordinate educational programming, cultivate community partnerships, help develop and maintain the Program’s website, lead social media communications, contribute to trainee education, and advance the educational and public service missions of the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center. Research activities are not included within the scope of this position. See Table 36 Level I for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $66,798-$127,163 .
