Position Summary  

The Equipment Operator plays a critical role in the successful execution of road maintenance, by expertly handling and operating medium to heavy machinery and equipment. This position ensures that all equipment is operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory standards. The operator is responsible for performing routine inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting to minimize downtime and maximize productivity. Collaboration with site supervisors and team members is essential to coordinate tasks and maintain a safe working environment. Ultimately, the Equipment Operator contributes to the timely and quality completion of projects by leveraging technical expertise and attention to detail.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operate various types of equipment such as skid steers, excavators, and forklifts in accordance with safety guidelines and operational procedures.
• Conduct pre-operation inspections and routine maintenance checks to ensure equipment is in optimal working condition.
• Identify and report any mechanical issues or safety hazards to the maintenance team or supervisors promptly.
• Follow project plans and instructions from supervisors to perform tasks accurately and efficiently.
• Maintain clear communication with team members to coordinate movements and ensure site safety.
• Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment and safe operating practices.
• Document work performed, including hours operated, maintenance activities, and any incidents or irregularities.
• Performs on-call duties during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Responds within required timeframes and is prepared for overtime during emergencies or peak workloads.
• Performs other duties as requested by supervisor or project leadership.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  

Knowledge

• Familiar with work zone safety principles, MUTCD guidance, company SOPs, PPE requirements, and hazard recognition near live traffic.
• Basic knowledge of drainage, roadside repairs, and temporary traffic control; can read simple traffic control plans and field sketches.

Skills

The Equipment Operator utilizes technical skills daily to maneuver heavy machinery safely and efficiently, ensuring project timelines are met without compromising safety. Strong mechanical aptitude allows the operator to perform routine inspections and identify potential equipment issues before they escalate. Communication skills are essential for coordinating with team members and supervisors to maintain a safe and productive work environment. Attention to detail is critical when following operational procedures and safety regulations to prevent accidents and equipment damage. Additionally, problem-solving skills enable the operator to adapt to changing site conditions and troubleshoot minor mechanical problems promptly.

Abilities

• Works independently on basic tasks and as part of a crew while prioritizing safety, quality, and productivity.
• Lifts up to 50 lbs., regularly carries up to 25 lbs., and works on feet for extended periods; able to kneel, bend, climb, and operate on uneven terrain and slopes near live traffic.
• Works outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, rain, and wind, and around dust, noise, and roadside vegetation.
• Adapts to multiple shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and responds to emergency callbacks and storm events within required timeframes.
• Travels within the assigned district and, when needed, stays overnight during storms or emergency operations. Living within a reasonable response time to the yard or project area is required.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: 

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 23 years old (per company insurance requirements).
• Must possess an active and valid Florida driver’s license with no restrictions and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and maintain insurability under company policy.
• Exposure to light equipment like skid steers and excavators.
• Basic math, reading, and recordkeeping skills to complete work orders and material logs accurately.
• Ability to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Flagger certification within company timelines.
• Willing and able to travel within the assigned district and report to different work sites; living within a reasonable response time to the yard is preferred.
• Compliance with the company's Drug and Alcohol Policy; able to pass pre-employment and random testing. A background check and job-related physical may be required.
• Proven experience operating heavy equipment in a construction, industrial, or related environment.
• Strong understanding of safety protocols and regulatory compliance related to equipment operation.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents, such as equipment manuals and safety guidelines.

Preferred

• Valid equipment operator certification or license relevant to the machinery being operated.
• Additional certifications in specialized equipment operation
• Experience with preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
• Familiarity with GPS and other technology-assisted equipment operation.
• Basic first aid and CPR certification.
• Previous experience working on large-scale construction or infrastructure projects.
