Bus Driver

Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.

Educational Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsement P and S (submit copy with application)
• Must be 18 years of age
• Ability to operate a bus
• Ability to follow verbal instructions
• Acceptable driving record according to Texas Education Agency standard

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

2. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding a departing bus.

3. Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.

4. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

5. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and prepare work orders for needed repairs.

6. Communicate with school personnel and parents about student behavior while on the bus.

7. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

8. Operate two-way radio equipment and communicate with transportation office.

9. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and complete required reports.

10. Drive bus on extracurricular activities as needed.

11. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular business hours to confer with district personnel.

12. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job responsibility unless instructed to work from home by supervisor.

13. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

Distance Learning and Virtual Instruction Duties and Responsibilities In the event of a school closure in response to a disaster, flood, extreme weather condition, fuel curtailment, epidemic, pandemic or other calamity, the following duties and responsibilities will be added to the above listed Major Job Responsibilities and Duties, as directed by the Superintendent.

14. Usage of personal equipment, including but not limited to personal cellular phone, personal computer, and personal internet service when working from home during a District closure due to government or Board order or during an emergency affecting normal District operations.

15. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control, ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain effective control over groups of students. Continual sitting, reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions. Ability to operate motor vehicle. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot) and vehicle fumes. Some bending, lifting and stooping while performing job related functions.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer; use of and access to phone system; video/instructional equipment; and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting

Motion: Repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.

Wage / Hour Status: Non Exempt

Minimum Salary: $17.00 / hour

Pay Grade: 5A

Minimum Work Days: 186
