Job Title: Mechanical Assembler – Engine Assembly Job Description

This role supports the engine sub-assembly process on a high-volume production floor, working with smaller engine components to prepare units for the next stages of assembly and testing. You follow detailed work instructions (Travelers) and use a wide range of hand, power, torque, and pneumatic tools to build and assemble diesel and gasoline engines that are remanufactured to meet strict quality and performance standards. You rotate through different areas of the assembly line, such as crankshaft assembly, piston assembly, and other engine build operations, while maintaining accuracy, safety, and consistent quality throughout the production process.

Responsibilities

• Follow detailed standardized work instructions (Travelers) to perform mechanical assembly tasks on diesel and gasoline engines.

• Support the engine sub-assembly process by assembling and preparing smaller engine components for subsequent production stages.

• Use a variety of hand, power, torque, and pneumatic tools, including torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and drills, to assemble components accurately.

• Work in multiple areas of the assembly line, such as crankshaft assembly, piston assembly, and other engine build operations, as production needs require.

• Ensure all assembled engines and components meet established quality and performance standards before moving to the next stage.

• Maintain a high level of attention to detail when fitting, fastening, and aligning mechanical parts and assemblies.

• Interpret and apply mechanical specifications, measurements, and torque values to ensure proper assembly and function.

• Operate safely around running engines, moving machinery, compressed air systems, and other manufacturing equipment.

• Keep workstations organized, clean, and compliant with safety and 5S or similar workplace organization practices.

• Communicate effectively with team members, leads, and other departments to coordinate workflow and resolve assembly issues.

• Identify basic mechanical problems during assembly and take appropriate steps to correct or escalate them.

• Consistently follow safety protocols, including the proper use of required personal protective equipment on the manufacturing floor.

• Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting process enhancements and supporting changes that improve quality or efficiency.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of mechanical assembly experience using hand and power tools.

• Hands-on experience working with engines or mechanical systems in roles such as mechanic, automotive technician, maintenance technician, diesel technician, assembler, machine builder, or similar positions.

• Proficiency using common hand and power tools, including torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and drills.

• Demonstrated ability to diagnose, repair, or assemble mechanical systems with minimal supervision.

• Ability to read, understand, and follow detailed standardized work instructions (Travelers).

• Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with engine components and assemblies.

• High level of attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality standards.

• Comfort working in a fast-paced production environment with constant manufacturing activity.

• Ability to work safely around mechanical equipment, running engines, moving machinery, and compressed air systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous employment as a mechanic, automotive technician, maintenance technician, diesel technician, assembler, machine builder, or in a similar mechanical role.

• Completion of vocational training or trade school coursework related to mechanics, automotive technology, or industrial maintenance.

• Military mechanical experience involving maintenance, repair, or assembly of vehicles, engines, or mechanical systems.

• Experience with automotive hobbyist projects, engine rebuilds, or other hands-on mechanical projects outside of formal employment.

• Familiarity with remanufacturing processes and rebuilding used engines to meet performance standards.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors.

• Willingness to rotate between different areas of the assembly line and adapt to changing production priorities.

Work Environment

You work in a manufacturing and engine testing facility with constant production activity and ongoing engine remanufacturing operations. The environment includes exposure to mechanical equipment, running engines, moving machinery, compressed air systems, electrical equipment, and engine testing cells. Conditions can be loud, hot, humid, and dirty, especially during summer months and when working near active test cells or production equipment. You frequently encounter oils, lubricants, coolants, diesel fuel, cleaning solvents, metal shavings, and other materials associated with engine assembly and manufacturing. Work takes place primarily on concrete floors, requiring you to be on your feet for most of the shift. Personal protective equipment is required at all times on the manufacturing floor, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, gloves, and any additional safety gear specified for the work area. You regularly work around overhead hoists, engine carts, material handling equipment, and large engine assemblies, following established safety protocols to ensure a secure and efficient production environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
