Our organization is in search of a full-time (1.0 FTE), fellowship-trained, board-certified Psychiatrist to become a part of the Psychiatry Department at our medical center in Portland, Maine. This position presents a distinctive hybrid role that merges leadership responsibilities with clinical practice.
The chosen candidate will take on the role of General Psychiatry Residency Program Director (0.5 FTE) while also engaging in psychiatric clinical care (0.5 FTE). This position caters to a varied patient demographic across both rural and urban settings.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a psychiatrist with an interest in academic leadership, with the potential for future involvement in additional academic and administrative capacities.
Our facility combines the intellectual and physical assets of an academic teaching hospital with the patient base and public health commitment of a large community hospital and mental health center. In addition to the General Adult Psychiatry Training Track, our residency program features a General Psychiatry/Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Integrated Training Track, along with a Rural Psychiatry Training Track. Our continuum of care and psychiatry residency training sites include a free-standing 100-bed psychiatric hospital and a comprehensive mental health organization serving the region. Our medical center also houses the state’s only pediatric tertiary care center and Level 1 Trauma Center.
We maintain an academic partnership with a prominent medical school, providing an enriching environment for patient care and academic engagement. Residents participate in teaching medical students from both the affiliated university and a nearby institution. They are also actively involved in departmental governance and decision-making, contributing to retreats, quality improvement initiatives, and holding formal positions on departmental committees.

We offer unique options for rural psychiatry rotations while providing community-based training experiences in Portland. Our medical center is a nationally recognized academic institution with a rich history of exceptional residency and fellowship programs. We are authorized to train over 400 trainees in various specialties, including rural concentrations. Physicians are encouraged to apply for faculty appointments at the affiliated medical school.
The Program Director holds full responsibility, authority, and accountability for the administration and operations of the program; teaching and scholarly activities; resident recruitment and selection; evaluation, promotion, and discipline; supervision; and faculty development. The Program Director is tasked with creating and maintaining a training plan that aligns with ACGME Common and Program-Specific Requirements, ensuring that all program aspects meet accreditation standards. There are ample opportunities for growth and development in teaching experiences, collaborating with both residents and medical students.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an Allopathic or Osteopathic Medical School, with completion of an internship and psychiatric residency and/or fellowship training.
- Current or eligible licensure as a physician by the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine.
- Current certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
- Current DEA Registration Certificate.
- Specialized expertise in Psychiatry with a minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience.
