Job Summary:
Perform, evaluate and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice, performing work in accordance with physician orders. Defined duties are within the infant, pediatric and adult patient populations in general, intensive, emergency, birth center and outpatient care areas. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
- Performs EKGs, PFTs, Holter and Event monitors, processes report interpretations, sends reports to physicians who requested them, and files reports in department, according to department procedures.
- Deliver oxygen and medications as prescribed and understanding the purpose of each and the possible side effects. Monitor patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood oximetry changes, and consult with physician if adverse reactions occur.
- Provide emergency care, including artificial ventilation and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Maintain accurate patient records by documenting all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in a manner that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors; documents according to established standards; communicates effectively.
- Develops and maintains professional and clinical skills. Completes all annual competency and education requirements within established parameters and timeframes. Participates in staff meetings, patient care meetings, educational in-services and other professional activities. Maintains awareness of policies and procedures and performance standards.
- Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.
- Respond to Code Blue, Rapid Response Teams or other urgent calls for care.
- Educate patients and their families about their conditions and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
- Teach, train, supervise, and utilize the assistance of students and respiratory therapy aides.
- Maintains current practice knowledge and evidence-based care.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Two (2) or more years of previous experience in all aspects of cardiopulmonary services, preferred.
Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:
- Current Washington State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
- National Board of Respiratory Care, RRT Certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or within 180 days of hire.
- Current American Heart-ACLS certification or ability to obtain within 180 days.
- Current American Heart-PALS certification or ability to obtain within 180 days.
- Current NRP certification or ability to obtain within 180 days.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of Blood Gas Analyzers and associated RapidComm Data Management System.
- Basic to intermediate level computer skills to include knowledge of current computer applications and proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Familiarity with hospital/clinic processes and terminology.
- Ability to understand and implement HIPAA compliance and the release of diagnostic test results.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret information from a variety of sources and to understand and follow complex instructions.
- Interpersonal and communication skills as necessary to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work tasks effectively to meet quality and productivity requirements.
- Ability to consult with other departments, as needed and as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
- Maintains a good working relationship and effective communication both within the department and with other departments for the benefit of the patient.
- Knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including infant, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
- Ability to treat patients and their families with respect and dignity. Coordinate and direct patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and that hospital policy is followed.
