RN Psychiatric

The SMH Level 1 Registered Nurse (RN) in the Psychiatric Unit 3900 provides specialized nursing care to psychiatric patients through comprehensive assessments, treatment planning, medication administration, and collaboration with behavioral health staff. The RN ensures patient safety, maintains accurate documentation, and supports patients in understanding their emotional health needs. This role requires strong clinical skills, effective communication, and at least two years of relevant experience. Responsibilities:

• Conduct intake assessments through patient and relative interviews to gather case history.
• Plan and provide nursing care tailored to psychiatric patients' medical and emotional needs.
• Make nursing diagnoses and recommend appropriate treatment options.
• Consult with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff to design individualized treatment plans.
• Administer psychotropic drugs and other medications, monitoring and documenting patient reactions.
• Arrange for further medical attention as necessary.
• Assist patients in understanding their emotional disturbances and the importance of treatment adherence.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and patients.
• Test for vital signs and manage pain treatment protocols.
• Document all patient information accurately in medical charts and follow physician orders.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and accurate medical records.
• Perform administrative duties such as filing, answering phones, typing, and completing progress notes electronically.
• Provide courteous, high-quality service by responding to patient and public requests or referrals.

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State (RN License NYS only).
• Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience.
• BLS Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) only.
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) Certification.
• Strong clinical assessment and psychiatric nursing skills.
• Ability to perform medication administration and monitor patient reactions.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in maintaining accurate documentation and medical recordkeeping.

• Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system within psychiatric specialty in the last year.
• Prior experience in psychiatric or behavioral health nursing.

• Must be able to work rotating Day/Evening/Night shifts.
• On-call, weekend, holiday, callback, and charge nurse responsibilities as per unit needs.
• Ability to maintain a safe and secure environment for psychiatric patients and staff.

• Rotating shifts including Day, Evening, and Night shifts.
• Schedule includes weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations.
• Shift assignments are based on unit requirements and staffing needs.
