Toms River Schools anticipates openings for the following position:

Title: School Nurse

Qualifications

1. As determined by state certification requirements for school nurse criteria.

Reports To: Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent/Building Principal/Supervisor

Job Goal

To aid in promoting a healthful environment in both the school and the community by maintaining and/or improving the present well-being of each student by delivering a total health program to the students; improving their future well-being by equipping them with the knowledge and ability to protect their health.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assesses the physical, emotional and social health status of students.

2. Counsels students whenever applicable.

3. Informally instructs and encourages students to develop positive health attitudes and habits.

4. Assists in planning, developing, and implementing the health curriculum whenever feasible. May be asked to teach health lessons when deemed necessary by administration.

5. Helps provide health care under the instruction and direction of physician and within school policy and regulations.

6. Provides emergency care where applicable.

7. Cooperates to provide a variety of special services where applicable. Works in conjunction with CST and school personnel to develop plans for medically fragile and medically high risk children.

8. Strives to make the school and community environment safer and healthier.

9. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.

10. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness. Administers first-aid in accordance with established first-aid procedures.

11. As necessary, will make home contact for follow-up on student health problems.

12. Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board Policy.

13. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence and to keep abreast of the latest school nurse methods and practices.

14. Attends and participates in meetings as deemed necessary and consistent with the needs of the district.

15. Advises and assists, as appropriate, school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.

16. Implements policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infection and contagious diseases.

17. Assumes other related duties and assignments during the assigned working day as superintendent or his/her designee deem necessary.

Annual Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with New Jersey State law and the provision of the board's policy on evaluations.
