Bldg & Env Services Technician - Advanced

Position Title Bldg & Env Services Technician - Advanced (Working Title: Grounds Worker) Position Summary Responsible for the cultivation, maintenance, and promotion of plants, turf, or a plant collection in an assigned program or geographical area of the University. Observes and diagnoses structural and horticultural problems. Job duties include installation of all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintenance of beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides. The role also encompasses assisting in cultural activities, spraying pesticides, operating equipment, lawn and landscape renovations, landscape installations, repair of irrigation systems, participation in landscape design and construction, supply and arrangement of special foliage for events, seasonal color coordination, and promotion of plant knowledge and understanding. Responsibilities Install new plant material according to plans and horticultural practices. Maintain beds through pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and pesticide application. Assist in cultural activities, landscape renovations, and irrigation system repairs. Participate in landscape design and construction projects. Supply and arrange special foliage for events and perform seasonal color coordination. Serve on the snow and ice management team during winter months. Operate equipment and use specialized tools for cultivation, maintenance, and plant transportation. Perform occasional evening, night work, and overtime as needed. Adhere to safety practices and wear required protective gear. Qualifications & Experience Advanced level of landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience. Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to hire date. Some positions may require special licenses or certification, to be specified. Physical/Mental Requirements Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions ranging from hot and humid to cold and windy at any time of day or night; perform physically demanding work; climb, bend, stoop, lift, and walk on varied terrain for extended periods; move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; wear safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection; serve as a mandatory employee during emergencies that may require the university to close.
