Overview The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), an accredited agency, protects about 500 square miles and over one million people in Maryland. The Mental Wellness Team seeks a licensed clinical psychologist to serve the helpers of our community. The ideal candidate is compassionate, empathic, patient, calm during crises, open‑minded, a mindful listener, detail‑oriented, creative in problem‑solving, able to work independently and proactively, and has strong verbal communication and writing skills. Salary range: $98,806 to $149,371, based on qualifications and experience. Responsibilities Provide therapeutic services to Fire and Rescue career employees, volunteers, and their immediate family members. Provide clinical consultation for the Peer Support – Critical Incident Stress Management (PS-CISM) team. Conduct educational/training programs at the Public Safety Training Academy, Emergency Communications Center, local Fire and Rescue stations, and other locations as needed. Provide clinical supervision to mental health providers (students, psychology associates, or other licensed clinicians). Deliver clinical treatment for work‑related trauma exposure and PTSD, critical incident stress, depression, and suicidality using evidence‑based modalities (CBT, CPT, cognitive therapy, prolonged exposure, brief eclectic psychotherapy, EMDR, and others as appropriate). Treat additional issues such as non‑work‑related trauma, anxiety, depression, sleep issues, family or relationship difficulties, substance use, grief/loss, occupational stressors, medical diagnoses, and parenting issues. Assist in providing referrals to appropriate outside providers (EAP, HHS Crisis Center, private clinicians, substance rehab centers, International Association of Fire Fighters Center for Excellence). Maintain appropriate clinical documentation. Provide clinical consultations and education to MCFRS employees as requested. Occasionally provide generalized clinical consultation to staff at Fire and Rescue Occupational Medical Services, maintaining confidentiality of therapy clients. Help train the PS-CISM team on mental health topics relevant to first responders. Teach FRS employees skills for mental wellness, including resiliency, stress management, substance use, trauma, critical incidents, and suicide prevention through training at academy, stations, ECC, and other worksites. Contribute to PS-CISM team trainings and to the resources available across the department (books, articles, videos, podcasts, or live meetings/groups). Maintain a behavioral health presence with station visits and ride-along activities. Provide clinical consultation as needed. Provide clinical supervision to mental health providers (students, psychology associates, or licensed clinicians). Occasionally work after hours (not an on‑call role) and work varied hours as needed. Submit secondary employment application for outside practice clients, approved by administration. Initial onsite work required, with potential for a hybrid (onsite/telework) schedule after probation. Ability to attend meetings or assignments outside the office. Education & Experience Doctoral degree in Psychology from an accredited college or university, as defined by Health Occupations Article 18-101. Two (2) years of professional, supervised experience in clinical therapeutic practice, including diagnostic and psychological testing. Must meet the general provisions of the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (Health Occupations Article 18-101, 18-302, and COMAR 10.36.07 and 10.36.07.04). Licensed as a Psychologist by the Maryland Board of Examiners for Psychologists. Desired Qualifications Crisis interventions. Trauma-informed interventions. Psychological services within a complex legal/regulatory environment. Psychotherapy with a diverse population. Consulting and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team. Providing therapeutic interventions. Curriculum development and training experience. At least three (3) years delivering clinical treatment for trauma for firefighters and/or public safety/emergency response/military employees. At least two (2) years teaching/training psychology material, coping skills, and stress management. Additional Information May need to occasionally work after hours (not an on-call or standby role). Must be able to work varied hours as needed. A secondary employment application must be submitted and approved for outside employment (private practice clients). This position requires onsite work initially, with potential for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of probation. This position will not conduct fit-for-duty evaluations or assessments in disciplinary matters. Ability to attend meetings or perform assignments outside the office, such as engaging with employees at FRS work sites.
