Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties.
This includes executing physician orders, operating pill call, and assisting the physician in examinations and treatments.
The nurse performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of his/her license.
The nurse assists in the professional management of the facility medical department.
Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the care and treatment of inmates and residents.
The nurse attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents.
Preparation of a list of inmates/residents to be examined is required.
The nurse prepares the examining room and equipment.
Medication is dispensed during pill call and documented as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Control of medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment is essential, including inventory as required by established procedures.
Emergency procedures are performed as needed.
The nurse keeps equipment and work areas clean, utilizing appropriate sanitation methods.
Documentation and reporting of activities are conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures.
The nurse assists the supervisor in evaluating the provision of all medical services.
Maintenance of security and confidentiality of all medical records is critical.
The nurse observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspection of the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents is required.
All supplies and equipment must be securely stored or safely disposed of.
Preparation and maintenance of a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs is necessary.
Reviewing reports and records produced during shifts helps ensure proper processing of documents in a timely manner.
The nurse must read, comprehend, and interpret medical and technical procedures and governmental regulations.
Communication is essential with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the general public.
Tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness, and good judgment are important in all interactions.
Evaluating and recommending physical safety requirements for a safe working environment for patients and staff is necessary.
Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports are required by policies and procedures.
Taking appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies is part of the job.
The nurse may need to escort inmates/residents or coordinate their movement to and from different areas for medical treatment.
Initiating and completing investigations and inquiries, while gathering information and evidence, is part of the role.
The nurse exercises independent judgment to determine when probable cause exists for disciplinary action.
Functions in confined areas include working rotating shifts and physically checking doors, windows, and other areas to verify security.
Verbal abuse from inmates/residents may be present and should be managed appropriately.
