The Radiation Safety team at MD Anderson's Cancer Center, under the supervision of Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Sandra Ramirez, oversees the licenses and registrations that allow for the possession and use of radioactive material and radiation-producing equipment at MD Anderson. Our team ensures all clinical and research use involving radiation is not only compliant with State of Texas regulations, but also that it is conducted in a manner that is safe for our employees and patients.
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Physics, or Engineering. They demonstrate strong time-management skills, a willingness to learn, and a genuine desire to grow professionally within the field. Motivated, detail-oriented, and adaptable, this candidate is eager to apply foundational knowledge while developing advanced technical and analytical skills.
Great position for an early-career candidate to start their career. They will gain exposure to all aspects of medical health physics as well as academic (non-clinical) health physics. They will work within a highly experienced team, including multiple board certified health physicists and medical physicist. The candidate will also gain exposure to other areas of environmental health & safety and emergency management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Consults and assists applicable departments in developing, implementing, and revising written radiation safety procedures for using radioactive material (RAM).
Consults and assists applicable departments in developing, implementing, and revising written radiation safety procedures for using radiation-producing, laser, and MRI machines.
Consults and assists with ALARA investigation cases and maintains the dosimetry program to include additions/deletions, coordination of dosimeters, and report generation.
Assist in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal compliance guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations and technical assistance.
Provides oversight and support of the dosimetry program.
Assists in the proper packaging and shipment of radioactive material.
Provides assistance and support for the Radioprotective Apparel Program.
Provide additional support for the safe handling and use of radioactive material and radiation-producing machines.
Provides Radiation Safety training as needed.
Performs clinical audits for radiation and X-ray programs on campus and at HAL locations.
Performs lab inspection and assists with other program areas as needed. Provides oversight and support of the dosimetry program.

EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
Preferred: Advanced degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
