Associate Veterinarian

Introduction
Our client is a not-for-profit organization seeking an Associate Veterinarian to join its onsite veterinary team, ideally on a full-time basis, although part-time candidates will also be considered. This is a particularly rewarding opportunity for a veterinarian who loves working with dogs and wants to see the impact of their work extend beyond the patients they care for each day. The organization breeds, raises, trains, and places service dogs primarily with children with disabilities, as well as veterans, from across the United States. Typically, between 250 and 300 dogs are enrolled in the program at any one time, with puppies bred at the facility before spending time with volunteer foster carers for development and basic obedience training. The organization remains responsible for their veterinary care throughout the program, giving the successful veterinarian the opportunity to support these dogs from their earliest weeks through to placement with the people whose lives they will go on to change.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Associate Veterinarian will provide medical and preventative care for service dogs in training and breeding dogs, including routine examinations, vaccinations, health evaluations, sick appointments, and addressing medical concerns identified by the staff. Responsibilities include performing initial health evaluations of potential breeding dogs, all vaccinations for the first 2 years of life, routine ovariohysterectomies, castrations, mass removals, and basic dental prophylaxis when required. Cases requiring outside specialty care are referred, with the veterinarian responsible for completing the appropriate referral paperwork. Communication and collaboration are also important parts of the position, with the veterinarian sharing medical information with volunteer trainers and working alongside other departments to coordinate the health needs of dogs throughout their training. Surgeries are normally completed in the mornings, with check-ups and appointments taking place during the late morning and afternoon. Normal working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, with no weekends, on-call, or after-hours responsibilities. Full-time is considered 32 hours or more per week, while a part-time veterinarian would ideally work Tuesdays and Thursdays. One to three years of experience would be ideal, although new graduates will also be considered and the organization has previously mentored new graduates.

Practice Details
The organization operates from a purpose-built campus with an onsite veterinary facility, including a surgery room, X-ray equipment, ultrasound, IDEXX Catalyst, Tonometer and anesthesia monitoring equipment, allowing the veterinary team to care for dogs directly within the service dog program. The organization places more than 120 service dogs annually and has created more than 2,000 service dog teams to date, with dogs within the program including retrievers, Labradors, and doodles. The role offers a lower-stress working environment with weekday hours and a genuine focus on work-life balance, while still giving the veterinarian the opportunity to make a meaningful difference through their clinical work. One of the most special aspects of the position comes once a month, when a class of families arrives to be placed with their service dogs. This gives the team the chance to see the outcome of the work they have put into caring for each dog and to witness firsthand the difference these dogs make to the children, veterans, and families receiving them.

Team
The veterinary team currently includes one other DVM, a Registered Veterinary Technician, and an office manager who provide qualified veterinary support for the incoming Associate Veterinarian. The wider organization has more than 60 staff members alongside thousands of volunteers who contribute to raising, training, and preparing the dogs for their future roles. There is a strong sense of shared purpose across the organization, with people who genuinely care about the mission and enjoy the work they do. The Associate Veterinarian will become part of this collaborative environment, working closely with veterinary colleagues, training staff, volunteer trainers, and other departments to keep the dogs healthy and ultimately help them reach the people who are waiting for them.

• Must hold the relevant degree(s) and additional qualifications to work as a veterinarian in the United States of America (USA)
• Must hold, be in the process of, or be able to obtain, a state license for the state they are applying to work in
• Must have the right to work in the United States of America (USA), or be able to obtain the required visa to do so
