Property Accountant

We are seeking a detail-oriented Property Accountant to support the financial operations of an affordable housing development portfolio. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate property-level financial records, preparing monthly financial statements, performing account reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and affordable housing program requirements.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Yardi , strong general ledger and month-end close skills, and an understanding of real estate or multifamily property accounting. Experience with affordable housing, LIHTC properties, or other subsidized housing programs is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate financial records and general ledger accounts for a portfolio of affordable housing properties.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and general ledger account analysis.
• Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including invoice coding, payment processing, tenant-related transactions, and expense allocations.
• Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and other month-end adjustments.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring financial information is accurate and submitted on schedule.
• Monitor property budgets, analyze variances, and investigate discrepancies in operating expenses and revenue.
• Maintain fixed asset schedules, track capital expenditures, and support construction-to-permanent asset accounting as needed.
• Assist with annual audits, tax preparation, lender reporting, and other financial compliance requirements.
• Support reporting and documentation requirements associated with affordable housing programs, including Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) properties, when applicable.
• Coordinate with property management, development, asset management, and external accounting teams to resolve financial issues.
• Maintain organized financial documentation and ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and applicable accounting standards.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
• 3+ years of property accounting, real estate accounting, or general ledger accounting experience.
• Hands-on experience with Yardi is required.
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and financial reporting.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting affordable housing, multifamily residential properties, or real estate development companies.
• Familiarity with LIHTC, HUD, Section 8, or other affordable housing programs and related reporting requirements.
• Experience with property-level financial statements, operating budgets, and variance analysis.
• Exposure to construction accounting, capital project tracking, and fixed asset accounting.
• Experience supporting external audits, tax filings, lender reporting, or investor reporting.
