Internal Caregiver – Student Position (Associate Caregiver) at UMass Memorial Health. Paid educational role for students enrolled in appropriate coursework with a high‑school degree. Works under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Temporary with possibility of permanent employment upon high‑school graduation. Major Responsibilities Assist in data collection and care and treatment of patients under RN/LPN supervision. Demonstrate understanding of comfort measures for the population served. Perform patient care activities as prescribed by and under the direct supervision of the RN/preceptor following established protocols. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff as necessary. Collaborate in a team model of care. Adhere to standards of care appropriate to assigned patients and consistent with job skills. Utilize correct format for all documentation. Report significant patient information timely and collaborate with department caregivers. Use effective/respectful communication techniques based on patient understanding. Support new techniques/procedures to improve efficiency and quality of patient care. Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Perform hand hygiene and use personal protective equipment (PPE) accurately. Train in performing accurate EKGs under RN/preceptor supervision. Identify guidelines for oxygen safety. Accurately place cardiac electrode leads under RN/preceptor supervision. Assist in activities of daily living (ADL) including oral hygiene. Assist with feeding patients and patients on feeding precautions. Answer call or bed/chair alarms promptly. Assist ambulation of patients independently and/or with assistive devices; lifting devices not included. Provide skin care and report changes to the preceptor. Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight; inform preceptor of results. Train to obtain fingerstick blood sugar under RN/preceptor supervision. Manage patient precautions. Perform urinary catheter care following infection prevention protocols under RN/preceptor supervision. Perform bladder scans under RN/preceptor supervision. Record intake and output and bowel movements as indicated. Adhere to fall risk precautions; report fall‑risk patients to RN/preceptor. Understand and respond to hospital codes such as Code Yellow, Code Blue, and Rapid Responses. Receive education on suicidal patients and care; no direct care provided. Report status or changes in patient condition to supervising RN/LPN timely. Document patient care activities accurately and completely per hospital policies. Maintain cleanliness and safety of assigned patient care areas, keeping rooms and hallways clutter‑free. Transport patients, equipment, and collect specimens as requested. Appropriately assemble, set up, and clean equipment for various procedures. Perform clerical functions as requested. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed. Use quality improvement in daily operations. Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Perform other similar or related duties as required or directed. Position Qualifications Licensure / Certification / Education CPR certification. CNA certification. Age 17 or older. Current Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire. Preferred Qualifications Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. Experience / Skills (Required) Reading, writing, and simple mathematical calculations. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups. Effective verbal communication skills. Manual dexterity for tests and treatment performance. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Experience / Skills (Preferred) Recent sub‑acute or acute care patient care assistant experience. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Students may only work during the day shift when school is in session, no more than 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week. No use of assistive lifting devices and no assignment to known behavioral health patients; removal and reassignment occur if a patient becomes a safety risk. Hand dexterity, hearing, and vision are required. The role involves standing, walking, and occasionally pushing or pulling heavy equipment; lifting of up to 50 pounds is required.
