Position Physical Therapist II, Outpatient Location Winthrop, MA Schedule 40 hours per week Position Summary Reporting to the Rehabilitation Therapies Supervisor/Manager, the level 2 Physical Therapist conducts comprehensive assessments of in‑ and out‑patients with physical and functional deficits, planning and implementing individual and group physical therapy treatments to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, prevent permanent disability, and restore independence using a variety of treatment techniques. The role collaborates with other disciplines to arrange appropriate follow‑up care and facilitate a successful return to home and work environments. The PT provides student training according to departmental guidelines and participates in continuous education. A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a licensed physical therapist is required; preferred is 1 year experience at BMC. Job Responsibilities Conduct physical therapy evaluation procedures according to professional and departmental guidelines. Respond to all consults in the assigned area within 24 hours; complete evaluation and documentation within 24 hours of consult (IP). Review patient records, gather necessary information, and obtain a physician’s order prior to assessment. Select evaluation procedures that reflect an understanding of the patient’s diagnosis, abilities, and limitations. Administer evaluation procedures according to the guidelines of standardized tests (including range of motion, manual muscle testing, mobility, air entry, and breath sounds); adapt procedures as indicated to accommodate patients’ specific needs. Interpret evaluation results, develop an integrated diagnostic impression, and make recommendations. Perform re‑evaluations according to departmental policies, changes in patient status, or response to treatment. Educate patient and caregiver regarding evaluation findings and management of care recommendations. Establish treatment goals and plans that reflect the needs of the patients while meeting departmental, institutional, and third‑party reimbursement requirements. Formulate treatment goals and plans that reflect the patient’s unique psychological and functional deficits. Establish measurable and attainable short‑ and long‑term goals in collaboration with patient and/or caregiver. Modify goals as warranted by changes in patient status. Assess discharge needs, including insurance issues, equipment needs, follow‑up appointments, and community services. Communicate patient care and discharge needs to team members as needed and arrange appropriate follow‑up. Establish treatment priorities based on evaluation results and the specific needs of the patients. Use creative treatment approaches and explore alternative solutions to individual patient problems. Demonstrate clinical problem‑solving skills across a variety of patient problems and substantiate actions taken. Progress patient treatment programs appropriately and terminate them as warranted by patient progress and condition. Recommend and/or issue appropriate assistive devices or durable medical equipment, ensuring proper fit. Develop and instruct patient and caregiver in home programs and/or use of recommended equipment; provide verbal and/or written instructions as indicated. Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with all patients. Engage patients in treatment, provide reinforcement and support, and set limits appropriately. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups regularly served. Notify supervisor/manager when patients in age groups not regularly served are present and seek assistance from those with the necessary knowledge. Adhere to diagnosis‑related precautions and demonstrate good judgment in handling potentially hazardous situations. Assign appropriate patients to Physical Therapist Assistant and Rehabilitation and/or Co‑op Aide; seek feedback. Monitor clinical supplies on assigned floors, requesting replacements in a timely manner. Complete area‑specific documentation accurately, thoroughly, and timely; achieve an average of 95% or greater on each indicator. Issue supplies/adaptive equipment in a cost‑effective manner; justify issuance and demonstrate patient use. Complete patient‑care charges accurately. Meet area‑specific productivity standards at least 95% of the time; identify problems and adjust to meet targets. Participate in the peer‑review process, complete the form thoroughly, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate peer learning. Complete mandatory requirements (PPD, competencies, safety/infection control tests, CPR, license renewal) within the given time frame. Initiate independent learning opportunities, integrate new information into daily practice, and communicate learning needs to supervisor. Stay current with advances in physical therapy treatments and techniques through professional meetings, continuing education, and literature review. Show knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations governing physical therapy practice. Assume responsibility and accountability for patient care performed by the physical therapist assistant. Direct and supervise the rehabilitation and/or co‑op aide consistently with the State Practice Act. Identify assigned rotation/floor needs and communicate with senior therapists and supervisor; contribute to development and updating of unit files and resource materials. Assist in developing and achieving area goals; collect data for research projects, clinical outcome studies, and quality improvement projects. Contribute to planning and implementation of physical therapy programs with supervisor and peers. Serve as a clinical resource for other health care professionals on assigned floors. Participate in team support, seek feedback, and share knowledge positively. Adapt to change with flexibility and maintain professional demeanor during stress. Attend all mandatory department meetings; arrive prepared and on time. Accept additional assignments such as membership in department and hospital task forces and committees. Provide at least one evidence‑based area in‑service annually and in‑services to other personnel as requested. Prepare and deliver a verbal presentation using peer‑reviewed journals. Participate responsibly in supervisory processes and bring prepared materials to supervisory meetings. Develop and meet annual goals with high quality performance. Engage with management on departmental initiatives and projects and complete tasks under guidance. Monitor area equipment and supplies, ensuring accountability and equitable distribution. Orient medical professional staff and community to physical therapy; supervise physical therapy students. Participate in pre‑affiliation, class‑related, or observation experiences. Instruct students in evaluation and treatment procedures practiced on assigned units. Facilitate clinical problem‑solving skill development through probing questions. Schedule weekly meetings with assigned students to provide feedback and learning experiences. Inform student program coordinator of student performance and provide training and corrective actions as needed. Conduct student performance evaluations and submit forms to the coordinator timely. Apply hospital values to decision‑making and facilitate the mission. Follow infection control and safety procedures. Demonstrate initiative with minimal prompting. Accumulate and maintain points required for the level‑2 title as outlined in the career ladder document. Education Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution. Doctorate degree preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts license. Current CPR certification. APTA and MCAPTA membership preferred. Experience 3 years’ experience as a licensed Physical Therapist. 1 year at BMC preferred. Knowledge and Skills Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and the health care team. Analytical abilities sufficient to evaluate patients’ condition, capabilities, and progress to develop appropriate treatment programs.
