Job Description
Academic Surgical Oncologist Position in Southern California
Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology
Position Overview:
Our organization is on the lookout for a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist to fill the role of Assistant or Associate Professor of Surgery within the Department of Surgery. The Loma Linda University Cancer Center, along with its network of affiliated clinics, manages a diverse array of complex general surgical oncology cases, supported by a full team of multidisciplinary specialists. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to both research and education, collaborating closely with medical students, residents, and fellows. The Department currently trains one Complex General Surgical Oncology fellow and one International Surgical Oncology fellow annually. The Surgical Oncology Division comprises faculty specializing in Complex General and Breast Surgical Oncology, all part of a Commission on Cancer accredited academic cancer program. This Division operates in various practice environments, including a leading tertiary academic medical center that is progressing towards NCI designation, as well as community cancer programs and satellite clinics serving San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
The immediate requirement is for a surgeon stationed at the main campus in Loma Linda, who will also provide services in Apple Valley, CA, located 48 miles away. This role, shared with the Division Chief, aims to ensure an equitable distribution of responsibilities within the Division, as other faculty members also serve at similar or greater distances, thereby addressing access barriers in this underserved area.
Surgeons across all settings have access to nine robotic platforms (including dv5 and da Vinci Xi), which are routinely utilized for gastrointestinal, endocrine, and HPB resections, such as the Whipple procedure. The Division also specializes in managing peritoneal surface malignancies, providing hepatic arterial infusion therapy, and engaging in clinical trials. These initiatives are bolstered by advanced capabilities in other specialties, including Advanced Endoscopy and Interventional Radiology. With a strong emphasis on education, the Division offers one of five ACGME-accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowships in California and is among only four institutions west of the Mississippi River with ACGME training programs in surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. Additionally, the Division hosts one of the few programs in the U.S. that provides formal training in surgical oncology for international candidates, addressing workforce shortages in low- and middle-income countries. Leadership opportunities abound within this Division. Candidates must possess the necessary board certification and licensure. We encourage applications from women and underrepresented surgeons.
Our Department of Surgery is dedicated to empowering surgical faculty and trainees to achieve their highest professional and academic aspirations while fulfilling our mission to promote holistic health. We aspire to cultivate global leaders in comprehensive care, education, and research. Faculty interested in global surgery can engage with the University’s Center for Global Surgery.
Our organization is affiliated with a prominent health and medical school, committed to delivering holistic care with exceptional clinical standards. The Troesh Medical Campus serves as the largest tertiary referral center in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, catering to a population nearing 5 million. Our health system boasts over 1,000 licensed beds, treats more than 1.5 million outpatients annually, and operates as a Level I trauma center for a region encompassing over 25% of California.
We continue to lead in integrating a faith-based approach to holistic health care. As a Seventh-day Adventist organization, our mission is to emulate the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ, striving to "make man whole." We are an equal opportunity employer, considering all applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability.
