Classroom Teacher
The primary purpose of this position is the fluent instruction in Spanish and supervision of assigned students. Instructional methods utilized must support the APC Board's Core Values and Mission, meet the need of our diverse student population, and result in measurable learning of state and District curriculum and performance standards.
Qualifications: Alaska Teaching Certificate and Bachelor's degree, or able to obtain one. Ability to meet the Alaska Reads Act requirements. Demonstrates high level of communication skills and meets District standards for oral and written language proficiency in English and Spanish. Skill in leadership and facilitation, including problem solving and conflict resolution. Excellent organizational skills for effectively managing multiple tasks. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Knowledge of the principles of first and second language acquisition, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Knowledge of human growth and development at assigned instructional level(s). Knowledge of effective student behavior management methods, having strong classroom behavioral management. Knowledge of the principles of effective instruction and differentiated instructional methods for students with varying levels of English and Spanish language proficiency.
Essential Duties:
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated by the principal.
- Plans a program of study to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students and adheres to the District curricular objectives.
- Displays a conceptual knowledge of the content being taught.
- Selects and/or creates teaching materials selected to fit into the instructional plan.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Alters teaching strategy to meet the needs of the students and is conscious of behavioral clues coming from students.
- Communicates information, explanations, justifications, expectations, directions, and evaluations to students, teachers, parents, other district staff, and community members with efficiency and clarity.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of principal.
- Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to students. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media; consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Creates or selects, and administers suitable tests for summative, formative, and diagnostic purposes.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintains accurate and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct in school. Develops reasonable rules of behavior, procedures for discipline, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner within the classroom. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when requested.
- Supervises and plans purposeful assignments for volunteers and assists the principal in supervising and evaluating classified staff as requested.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence, attends staff meetings, and serves on committees.
- Other duties as assigned by principal.
Physical Requirements: LIGHT WORK: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
