Shoreside Tankerman – Beaumont / Lake Charles Reports to: Field Supervisor and/or Operations Manager Description The Tankerman serves as the person‑in‑charge of critical operations, with the responsibility of protecting the environment by ensuring the safe, reliable transfer of dangerous liquid cargo. The role involves performing a variety of inspections from the beginning to the end of each transfer. The Tankerman must hold government‑issued certification and Tankerman certification when working aboard liquid‑carrying vessels, and includes able seamen and ordinary seamen. Duties & Responsibilities Receive and confirm orders from dispatch, facility, boat captain and report any discrepancies to Gulfstar Dispatch Department immediately. Travel to and from assigned facility, as directed by Gulfstar Dispatch Department. Carry all equipment from vehicle to facility to ensure that all equipment necessary to complete the transfer will be close at hand. Wear all protective clothing and equipment, including respirator and fresh air equipment that may be required to transfer product. Inspect the barge prior to the cargo transfer operation, to ensure the vessel is mechanically sound and in accordance with US Coast Guard requirements. Perform Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and verify all barge documents are onboard prior to conducting cargo transfer operations. Complete and sign the Declaration of Inspection (DOI) and follow all CFR requirements as they relate to Tankering Operations. Maintain machinery, including barge pump engines, pump valve packings, winch wires, and soft lines when necessary. Connect cargo arm or hose and align the barge’s valves to send and receive cargo. Report irregularities of the vessel, and/or facility prior to beginning the transfer. Immediately stop transfer and call dispatch if irregularities occur. For discharge operations, check engine and pump to ensure they are mechanically sound prior to beginning transfer. Continuously monitor and adjust cargo flow and/or barge's mooring lines throughout transfer. Upon dispatch approval, disconnect cargo arm or hose and complete required paperwork and log book once the transfer is complete. Secure the barge’s valves and openings and prepare the barge for sail. Call dispatch with job information prior to departing the job site. Ability to work an on‑call rotation schedule which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays. Required to be ready at a moment’s notice, while on rotation to be dispatched to a job and arrive on dock within two hours, sometimes ASAP. Attendance and participation at monthly safety meetings, opportunity for improvement and change management activities. Physical Demands Multilimbed Coordination – coordinate two or more limbs (e.g., two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing. Walking – walk one to four miles per job. Weight – lift, grip, pull or hold up to 80 pounds to waist and carry up to 300 feet. Arm‑Hand Steadiness – keep hand and arm steady while moving or holding them in one position. Working Conditions Environment – work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. Adjust actions in relation to others’ actions. Technology Employee Information Management Systems – QuickBase CBT Safety Training Software – complete all safety training topics, as they are assigned through Moxie Media. Company Cell Phone – review and respond to company email communications, as needed. Tools Fire Extinguisher – employee must provide and have a fire extinguisher on every transfer. Hand Tools – employee must provide and maintain their own hand tools. PPE – GSI issued Personal Protective Equipment. Requirements and Minimum Qualifications MMC – must possess US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with a Tankerman PIC Barge (DL) endorsement. TWIC – must possess a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC). Medical Certification – must clear a USCG Pre‑Employment and Annual Merchant Mariner Examination. Drug & Alcohol Clearance – must pass and remain compliant with Pre‑Employment, Annual, Random, Post Incident, and Reasonable Suspicion for Corporate Non‑DOT and USCG DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing Policies. Driver’s License – must possess a valid driver’s license in resident state.
