BI Developer

Overview Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) is building a cloud-native Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse on a Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold). We need a BI Developer who partners with academic and administrative leaders to translate data investment into actionable insights, designing Power BI solutions that transform decision‑making across campus. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Partner With Stakeholders: Act as the primary interface between IT and business units, facilitating requirements sessions, translating ambiguous questions into data models, and executing prototype‑first development cycles. Design and Deliver Power BI Solutions: Build, publish, and govern production‑grade Power BI reports and dashboards for Finance, HR, Enrollment, Advancement, research analytics, and academic program performance, ensuring design and insight are both achieved. Build and Govern Semantic Models: Author and maintain Direct Lake semantic models, connecting to Gold‑layer Delta tables. Implement DAX measures per the Data Governance Council’s Business Glossary and enforce row‑level security based on RBAC roles. Recommend Smarter Alternatives: Evaluate stakeholder requests and suggest optimal formats—paginated reports, embedded visuals, Excel PowerPivots—based on business objectives, providing prototypes when Power BI is unsuitable. Write SQL and DAX With Precision: Execute T‑SQL and Spark SQL queries against the Lakehouse endpoint and author DAX measures that faithfully represent canonical definitions. Document calculations in plain English and contribute metadata to the dbt‑powered catalog. Govern the BI Environment: Participate in the Data Governance Program, manage workspace structure, naming conventions, sensitivity labels, and dataset endorsement. Certify reports with domain stewards and update solutions promptly when policies change. Support and Enhance Existing Solutions: Maintain and improve legacy Azure SQL‑based Power BI reports, migrating them to Direct Lake mode as Gold‑layer tables become available. Additional Duties Rapid turnaround from discovery to prototype, delivering working drafts within days. Structure work to align data sources, semantic models, and dashboards for consistency, performance, and auditability. Attendance and Onsite Requirements Must be punctual and meet deadlines. Requires onsite support on an as‑needed basis, including meetings with individuals or small groups at campus locations. Organizational Adaptability: Adapts to changing business needs with minimal notice while maintaining performance. Education and Experience Certification Preferred: Microsoft PL‑300, DP‑600. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, or related field; or 3–5 years of relevant experience. 3+ years of BI development experience, including governance of semantic models. Experience with stakeholder requirements gathering and prototype‑driven delivery. Experience in higher education or healthcare is a plus. Experience with Microsoft Fabric or comparable Lakehouse platforms (Databricks, Synapse, Snowflake) is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Computer Skills and Tools Power BI (Desktop, Service, Embedded, Paginated). Direct Lake semantic layer, Microsoft Fabric OneLake (Gold layer). DAX (Expert), T‑SQL / Spark SQL (Proficient). Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, SQL Analytics Endpoint, Data Factory). Source Systems: Jenzabar (SIS/ERP), Canvas (LMS), institutional research data stores. Microsoft 365 A5 with Fabric capacity; Power BI Pro within A5 tenant. Physical Demands and Work Environment Primarily sedentary, requiring prolonged sitting and computer use. Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting up to 25 lbs.
