Special Education Support

Supports district schools and principals in their effort to foster an optimal educational environment for students. Assist special education teachers and staff in providing an individualized special education program for special needs students in a resource and or general education classroom setting.

Major tasks include: assisting special education teacher and staff in developing plans for meeting students' individual goals and objectives, selecting classroom materials appropriate to implement goals and objectives, working without direct supervision with individuals or groups of individuals on concepts introduced by the supervising teacher, assisting special needs students in the general education classrooms, implementing strategies, techniques and modifications unique to the special needs students as the need arises or as required, gathering data and disseminating information and reports to special education staff and parents, participating in IEP meetings as necessary, overseeing special education program if situation arises which demands attention of the special education teacher, maintaining confidentiality in regard to information about Special Education students, following all FERPA policies and laws, participating in training sessions, developing and maintaining understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, abilities and disabilities, completing Medicaid, Direct Service Claiming (MIPS), forms on a monthly basis, monitoring student's behavior inside and outside of the classroom, accompanying students to and from class if needed, reinforcing therapy goals and skills, assisting student to stay on task, redirect/refocus and offer praise and contingency rewards, using effective basic strategies for management of behavior, maintaining professionalism when working with families, refraining from becoming personally involved outside of school, assisting in modifying classroom and homework of students requiring modifications, and performing other job related duties as assigned.

Requirements include: being at least 18 years of age, high school graduate or equivalent, completed at least 2 years as student at an institution of higher education; obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or met the State Paraprofessional Academic Assessment, knowledge of special education disabilities and classifications, process and laws preferable, good written and oral communication skills, ability to relate well to children and adults, knowledge in all academic areas, current First Aid and CPR certification, and computer skills.

Physical demands include: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work environment is usually moderate noise level, and incumbents may be subjected to odors and extreme temperatures.
