Packaging and Transportation Technical Associate

Position Overview Responsible for work assignments for the Packaging and Transportation Group within the Waste Management and Work Control Division (WMWCD) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Provide technical expertise and regulatory interpretation to determine shipping requirements for hazardous and radioactive materials and ensure compliance with DOT, IATA, 49 CFR, and BNL internal regulations. Responsibilities Provide technical expertise and regulatory interpretation for shipping radioactive and hazardous materials. Perform packaging and paperwork generation for radioactive materials shipments. Receive and inspect incoming radioactive material shipments from off‑site locations. Review shipping memo requests issued through the PeopleSoft system for all BNL shipments. Assist in preparation of work control documentation, technical work documents, job safety analysis, and radiological work permit requests to ensure adequate controls are in place and adhered to. Work under limited direction and as a team member under tight deadlines. Manage customer expectations by developing creative solutions to regulatory limitations. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; BS degree in a related technical field and 2 years of relevant experience. High school diploma or equivalent, technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a related technical field, BNL CCI program completion, and 6 years of relevant experience. High school diploma or equivalent, technical high‑school certification (e.g., BOCES) and 7 years of relevant experience. Alternate qualification: 8 years of relevant experience. Knowledge and experience in chemical management and hazardous material packaging and transportation, and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation. Ability to follow procedures and maintain all training and qualifications. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook and Word. Physical ability to handle and lift up to 50 lbs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, technical high‑school certification (e.g., BOCES) and 9 years of relevant experience. High school diploma or equivalent, technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a related technical field, BNL CCI program completion, and 8 years of relevant experience. Alternate qualification: 10 years of relevant experience. Alternate qualification: BS degree in a related technical field and 4 years of relevant experience. Regulatory understanding of IATA regulations and ability to interpret and apply the requirements to shipment preparation. Regulatory understanding of 49 CFR and ability to interpret and apply the requirements to shipment preparation. Working knowledge of chemical hazards and interactions. Working knowledge of radiological hazards and safe handling methods. Ability to use radiation detection and survey instruments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Additional Information Location: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY — fully on‑site. Driver’s license required. Salary range: $80,000 – $107,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualification. No visa sponsorship.
