Registered Nurse

The department specializes in Medical Surgical nursing. The unit typically has 10 beds, with the capacity to expand to 18. Nurse-to-patient ratios are usually 1:4, averaging 1:5, with a rare possibility of 1:6. Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, CHF, COPD, hysterectomy, cholecystectomy, appendicitis, and pediatric cases such as elevated bilirubin and asthma exacerbations. The unit also manages rehabilitation patients. RNs are seldom required to titrate drips, with only occasional titratable medications such as insulin and antibiotics. A charge nurse is present on each shift and may occasionally take a 1:2 assignment. There are patient care technicians available on the unit at a ratio of 1:10. Respiratory therapy equipment is available, excluding ventilators; CPAP and BiPAP are used as needed. Remote tele techs monitor patients, and familiarity with reading strips is preferred. Shifts involve 12 hours, with scheduling managed by the unit manager. Weekend work is mandatory, with a minimum of 5 weekend shifts every 6-week period. Holiday shifts may be required based on needs. Floating to other departments may occur as necessary. Employees may wear any scrub color or pattern. Two 12-hour shifts of orientation with a preceptor will be provided.
