Position Summary The Emerging Store Manager (ESM) is a developmental leadership role at Walmart US designed to prepare associates for future Store Manager opportunities. The assignment lasts no longer than 12 to 18 months and requires mobility within the assigned region for potential placement. Responsibilities Train and develop associates across merchandising, people leadership, financial management, customer experience, and community engagement. Assist in managing store financial performance by authorizing and managing expenditures, monitoring sales and profit goals, and analyzing economic trends. Generate, review, and act on business reports and profit‑and‑loss statements. Support sales by ensuring effective merchandise presentation, accurate pricing, proper signage, and appropriate inventory levels. Enforce customer service standards and resolve complaints within company guidelines. Assist with projected staffing plans, implement talent pipelines, and support succession planning. Initiate and participate in community outreach programs as a company liaison. Uphold the Open Door Policy by meeting with associates, listening to concerns, researching issues, and providing resolutions. Lead and direct the store management team: establish objectives, communicate goals, monitor performance, and identify training needs. Enforce compliance with company policies, hold associates accountable, analyze reports, and implement action plans. Implement and monitor asset protection and safety controls, maintain quality assurance, and oversee operational reviews. Execute multiple business plans and projects by identifying customer and operational needs, developing plans, removing barriers, and measuring results. Facilitate strong partnerships with stakeholders across the organization, including Market Managers, Regional Leadership, Merchandising, Human Resources, and Asset Protection. Promote and support company values, ethics, and the Open Door Policy. You must maintain regional mobility throughout the assignment and complete the ESM program within 12 to 18 months. If a Store Manager role is not secured, next steps will depend on performance and business needs. Minimum Qualifications Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, retail management, or financial management plus 2 years of management experience in a retail, operations, or distribution environment with supervisory and hiring responsibilities. Option 2: 4 years of management experience in a retail, operations, or distribution environment with supervisory and hiring responsibilities. 2 years of general management experience, including financial accountability. For facilities that sell firearms: successful completion of a firearms‑specific Criminal Background Check (CBC) and Firearms Authorized Training. For facilities that sell only ammunition with state‑specific requirements: successful completion of a current state‑issued Certificate of Eligibility. Preferred Qualifications 3 years of management experience with financial accountability in a retail or multi‑unit environment. Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Leadership through Live Better U and Bellevue University. Demonstrated willingness and ability to relocate within the assigned region. Experience as a Walmart Assistant Manager, Coach, or Store Lead with readiness for increased scope and responsibility. Experience running a fresh, dry grocery, or general merchandise area.
