**2 ROLES! AIR Telemetry, and LIQUID COOLING Telemetry. Please pay attention to the slight separation in expectations for each. Titles: Air AND Liquid Cooling Telemetry Data Engineer Location: Preference given to Redmond WA for both candidates, but open to remote. *IF candidates are in the Greater Seattle Area, they will need to adhere to the team's hybrid policy: 4 days onsite, Studio C. Team: Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), IDEA - RADAR (Reliability, Automation, Detection, Alerting & Readiness) Duration: Expected 18 Months TEAM OVERVIEW: The RADAR team serves as Microsoft's data center telemetry trust layer within the IDEA organization, enabling operational intelligence across the global datacenter fleet. The team focuses on telemetry validation, monitoring, detection engineering, and readiness programs that support datacenter operations, sustainability initiatives, and Microsoft's "Sea of Green" operating model. RADAR partners closely with engineering, operations, commissioning, and sustainability teams to ensure telemetry data is trusted, actionable, and operationally ready at cloud scale. PROJECT OVERVIEW: Microsoft is expanding telemetry coverage beyond electrical systems into mechanical, environmental, thermal, humidity, and liquid-cooling domains. This Telemetry Data Engineer will play a key role in building automated frameworks that validate telemetry quality, monitor device health, classify sensor states, and improve operational visibility across mechanical infrastructure throughout Microsoft's datacenter fleet. The ideal candidate will help transform raw telemetry into trusted operational signals, allowing datacenter operations teams to quickly identify issues, improve incident response, and support sustainability and cooling initiatives worldwide. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES/DAY TO DAY: - Develop telemetry validation frameworks for mechanical infrastructure including: Air Cooling: CRAH (Computer Room Air Handler), AHU (Air Handling Unit), Chillers, Pumps, Airflow, Temperature/Humidity telemetry Liquid Cooling: CDU (Cooling Distribution Unit) and HRU (Heat Reduction Unit) telemetry, Liquid cooling loops, Thermal analytics - Define telemetry standards, expected signal inventories, and onboarding requirements for mechanical assets. - Build automated validation processes to identify missing, stale, flatlined, or non-conforming telemetry signals. - Design and implement device and sensor health classification frameworks (Healthy, Degraded, Failed, Unknown). - Develop fleet-wide monitoring, anomaly detection, and telemetry quality measurement solutions. - Create health validation models for temperature, humidity, thermal trending, liquid cooling, and environmental monitoring systems. - Partner with commissioning, operations, and engineering teams to establish telemetry readiness requirements for production deployments. - Expand RADAR's detection platform into mechanical and environmental telemetry domains. - Build scalable data pipelines supporting signal validation, device enumeration, health classification, and operational alerting. - Enable fleet-wide visibility into telemetry readiness and health through the Sea of Green platform. - Create operational data products and dashboards that help identify actionable issues across the global datacenter fleet. - Collaborate with DMCE, CE Operations, DART, THREAD, TSI, Sustainability, and other stakeholder teams to drive telemetry governance and best practices. SUCCESS WILL BE MEASURED BY: - Increased mechanical telemetry coverage across Microsoft's global datacenter fleet. - Improved automated validation of mechanical and environmental telemetry signals. - Expansion of Sea of Green visibility into mechanical infrastructure health. - Improved confidence and classification of critical mechanical sensors. - Faster detection and engagement for telemetry failures and operational incidents. - Increased adoption of telemetry health insights by Operations and partner teams. - Enhanced readiness of telemetry supporting power, cooling, sustainability, and liquid-cooling initiatives. TOP 3 REQUIRED HARD SKILLS: 1. 5+ years of Data Engineering experience (preferred in Critical Environment/Thermal or Mechanical Systems) - Strong experience designing and supporting large-scale telemetry, IoT, industrial controls, monitoring systems, or sensor-driven data platforms. 2. Advanced SQL, Kusto (KQL), and Python skills - Ability to build scalable data pipelines, validation frameworks, monitoring solutions, and analytics capabilities across large datasets. - *Kusto is a Microsoft query tool commonly used for time series data and heavily used for this team 3. Telemetry Validation & Monitoring Experience - Hands-on experience building automated validation, anomaly detection, monitoring, or operational readiness solutions that support critical infrastructure or business operations. ALSO REQUIRED: - Degree in: Computer Science, Engineering, Data Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field. - Demonstrated ability to translate operational requirements into scalable data solutions ADDITIONAL NICE TO HAVE SKILLS: - Experience with Azure Data Explorer (ADX), Power BI, and cloud-scale analytics platforms. - Knowledge of data pipelines, distributed systems, and telemetry architectures. - Experience supporting operational readiness, incident response, or automation initiatives. - Ability to translate operational requirements into scalable technical solutions. - Exposure to sensor quality validation, telemetry onboarding, or monitoring systems. - Preferred Qualifications: - Datacenter infrastructure or critical environment experience. - Understanding of HVAC, chilled water systems, CRAH/AHU units, cooling loops, pumps, thermal management, or liquid cooling technologies. - Experience supporting sustainability programs, operational efficiency initiatives, or infrastructure monitoring. - Familiarity with mechanical and environmental telemetry systems. BEST V AVERAGE: Best Candidate: - Has experience working with datacenter infrastructure, industrial systems, IoT platforms, or mission-critical environments. - Combines strong data engineering expertise with an understanding of mechanical systems and operational technology. - Deep experience building telemetry validation, monitoring, and anomaly detection frameworks. - Comfortable partnering across engineering, operations, and business teams. - Proactively identifies data quality issues and develops scalable automation solutions. - Excited about building enterprise-scale telemetry trust and operational intelligence platforms. Average Candidate: Strong data engineer with general analytics and pipeline development experience. Experience with monitoring and telemetry data but limited exposure to infrastructure systems.
