Quality Assurance Manager

Responsibilities Direct and lead employees involved in quality assurance, laboratory analysis, physical testing, customer technical service, product development, and end-application for the Steel Mill Division. May also lead and direct scheduling and billet handling functions at the mill s discretion. Ensure production adheres to customer specifications and accepted standards; assist the corporate sales group with product applications and recommendations; handle all product quality issues for the assigned steel mill. Ensure ongoing compliance with the Gerdau Business System (GBS). Report to the VP & General Manager, with a dotted line to the Director of Corporate Quality; supervise Routine Facilitators, Improvement Facilitators, Product Metallurgists, Lab Technicians, Schedulers, and Billet Yard Personnel; number of direct/indirect reports varies by location. Possess in-depth knowledge of testing techniques and analytical procedures related to product quality, metallurgical requirements, and standards for steel products; be familiar with chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical analysis and related testing equipment. Maintain understanding of quality control, process control techniques, and investigation processes; manage procedures related to computer systems including local MES, SAP, and location-specific applications. Oversee chemical analysis and mechanical testing of each batch for adherence to company and customer standards; investigate discrepancies and discuss product adherence with customers. Develop and present recommendations to operating departments on metallurgical issues; establish standard practices and procedures in collaboration with Melt Shop and Rolling Mill leadership; approve process changes. Collaborate with Operations to resolve quality issues and develop new products without compromising quality or safety; manage interdisciplinary teams and ensure alignment of work procedures and equipment. Act as liaison with customers, quality inspection firms, and external agencies to ensure compliance with quality requirements; may visit job sites or testing facilities to verify compliance; investigate quality failures and determine root causes; propose corrective actions. Assist other Gerdau locations as needed to resolve quality issues; share best practices through knowledge management and corporate quality meetings; participate in ongoing corporate quality projects. Recommend disposition of batches not meeting specifications; maintain laboratory and test equipment; ensure accuracy of certified mill test reports for customers; inform leadership of any product deviations. Oversee personnel planning, selection, and training; manage people development and coaching; participate in special projects as assigned; stay current with technology to drive continuous quality and process improvements. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in metallurgy or materials science with a minimum of 7 years of related steel mill experience; knowledge in product application area required; strong interpersonal skills; supervision and people development experience preferred.
