Opportunity We are looking for a Metrologist to join the team at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Divisions (NSWCCDs) Fabrication Team. In this role, you will utilize high precision measurement equipment (coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and perform computerized spatial analysis. Calibrate equipment then measure item geometry and spatial relationships. This includes small and large‑scale items requiring dimension and tolerance analysis to determine accuracy. You will restrain items to prevent hog and sag deformation prior to measurement. Provide Tolerance Measurement Study upon completion. Perform preventative and routine maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment as needed and issue calibration certificates. Responsibilities Prepare measurement reports per customer specifications. Determine if first article parts are acceptable. Implement new innovative practices to promote part accuracy, and proficiency. This may include, but is not limited to, new reporting templates or formats that better facilitate the documentation, reporting, and tracking of precision measurement activities. Utilize PC-DMIS as the primary metrology software (with Polyworks as a secondary tool) to inspect high‑tolerance finished components designed with minimal fixturing to perform first‑article inspections. Leverage PC-DMIS and Polyworks capabilities to advise shop management, supervisors, and planners during the planning and costing phase regarding the difficulty, complexity, and potential issues that may arise during the inspection process. Analyze and diagnose complex problems that arise during the inspection process. Utilize PC-DMIS, Polyworks, or Spatial Analyzer to determine the root cause of potential issues and develop robust methods and processes to ensure similar issues are reduced or eliminated in future tasks. Utilize PC-DMIS or Polyworks software to perform Laser Tracker measurements in strict accordance with Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard operating practices. Adhere to the Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices when applicable. Design specialized tooling fixtures to be used to support the production of complex machined components. Apply knowledge of engineering disciplines in structural design, weld design materials applications and prototype design. Skilled in the interpretation of complex engineered drawings, sketches and verbal communications. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Must have significant experience writing, troubleshooting, and running PC-DMIS inspection programs. Experience with utilizing high precision measurement equipment (coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and performing computerized spatial analysis. Knowledge of manufacturing trades including industrial and commercial manufacturing processes to contribute to the engineering design and development function. Ability to collect and analyze data in test samples and fabrication mockups and apply the data collected to the fabrication of future high‑cost components and models. Experienced in inspecting and dimensionally verifying components and models to ensure compliance with dimension specified in drawings, specifications and control documents. Experience with generating and delivering measurement reports per customer specifications. Thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices, including NIST. Ability to read and work from highly detailed drawings and specifications. Desire to learn, ask questions, and take initiative within safety and skills limitations. Desired Qualifications Possess a working knowledge of machining and sheet metal processes. Familiarity with NAVSEA, Navy, or other military standards for fabrication. Experience with PolyWorks and Spatial Analyzer. Physical Requirements Office, industrial and construction settings; the work requires the employee to spend most of the day standing, kneeling, or sitting in awkward positions. The employee will lift weights up to 80 lbs. The employee will work from ladders and scaffolds, also trenches, and hard to reach places by bending, stretching, and stooping. Working Conditions You will frequently work inside and outside of buildings. The employee will work in cold weather, hot sun, and environments where ventilation or respirators may be necessary. The employee must be safety minded, check tools and equipment, and ensure tools are kept in a safe working condition. Lift up to 80 lbs. Work in Industrial and Test Facility Environment including cranes, fork trucks and vehicle operations. Perform work in industrial settings where the potential for hazards exists. Incumbent is regularly exposed to noise, electrical shock, wet surfaces, and climbing.
