SUMMARY: Crossing Guards play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our students by maintaining a safe path of travel when crossing public streets in school zones. This role requires vigilance, patience, and a commitment to public safety. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
• Control and direct pedestrian traffic at designated crosswalks using provided equipment to ensure the safety of Temple ISD students and families.
• Sets traffic cones, warning devices, and flags as required and wear the provided reflective vest, and fluorescent cap, while utilizing the assigned stop sign and flashlight during duty hours.
• Maintain a professional, attentive, and alert presence during assigned work hours.
• Ensure students remain on the curb until the crossing guard is positioned in the middle of the crosswalk and all traffic has come to a complete stop; then signal students to cross safely. Remain positioned in the center of the crosswalk until the last student has safely reached the curb on the opposite side of the roadway.
• Educate pedestrians on proper crossing procedures and safety protocols, including instructing students to walk bicycles and skateboards across the crosswalk.
• Monitor the assigned crossing area and promptly report any safety concerns or hazards.
• Maintain reliable transportation and the ability to report directly to the assigned crossing location. Regular attendance and punctuality are required to ensure consistent coverage of assigned crossing locations.
• Adhere to all district policies, safety procedures, and applicable traffic regulations.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, motorists, and emergency personnel as needed.
• Report accidents, incidents, unsafe conditions, or unusual occurrences promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
• Participate in required safety training and meetings to maintain current knowledge of crossing procedures and emergency protocols.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, or designee. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to speak proficient English and have the ability to clearly communicate instructions to students, parents, and drivers ensuring a safe crossing experience. Candidates must have strong observational skills to monitor traffic flow, pedestrian movement, and overall surroundings, and must show proficiency with equipment provided such as stop signs safety vests, hand signals etc.
Qualified candidates must have the ability to think and remain calm under pressure, have familiarity with local traffic laws, pedestrian safety, and crossing guard protocols. Must be punctual and reliable to ensure consistent presence during designated school or crosswalk hours. Candidates must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and meet all physical qualifications of the position and may be required to complete an annual physical agility test (PAT). EDUCATION or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Experience is preferred but not required. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. REASONING ABILITY: Demonstrated ability to apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions provided in written or oral form. Must also be capable of addressing problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The position requires frequent standing for prolonged periods, walking while maintaining balance, using hands to handle or feel objects, and reaching overhead with hands and arms. The employee may also occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee in this position is required to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and respond promptly to emergency situations. To perform the duties of a Crossing Guard, candidates must be able to lift and hold a stop sign weighing up to 1 pound in an upright position while simultaneously maintaining the opposite hand in a raised position. Candidates must also be able to reach overhead to install flags on crosswalk signs and lift, carry, and move traffic cones and other traffic control devices weighing up to 20 pounds. Candidates must possess vision of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses, and meet established hearing standards, including the ability to pass a hearing test with or without hearing aids. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this position, employees may occasionally work in wet or humid conditions, extreme heat, or freezing temperatures. During the fall season, work may also be performed in low-light or dark conditions during early morning hours. Employees may be exposed to moving vehicles and changing traffic patterns while performing job duties. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
