The intent of the individual in this position is that he or she is seeking to become a sworn police officer. As such, he or she will attend the most recent upcoming Basic Law Enforcement training, which is a rigorous program that consists of 784 course hours and takes 20 weeks to complete. The Basic Law Enforcement training will take place at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center located in Forsyth, Georgia. The recruit will be sponsored by the City of Griffin Police Department (GPD) whereby GPD will pay you an hourly rate for training hours worked and will pay for your registration and training fees. After the recruit successfully completes the program, he or she receives the Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) certification and will then advance to the law enforcement officer position with GPD. Until that time, the recruit is not a sworn police officer and does not have the authority to make arrest. He or she will, however, assist patrol officers in performing their duties and may be used as a resource in emergencies and special events. He or she will also receive in-house training to include a basic knowledge of the field of law enforcement including criminal law, traffic law, criminal investigation, crime prevention, traffic control and direction, accident investigation, juvenile delinquency, and other related fields. Upon receiving the POST certification, the individual will provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Position Requirements Employee must have the visual ability to observe and detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians. The employee will be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, water, smoke, gas, weapons, contagious or infectious diseases, blood, and irritating chemicals; therefore, the use of specialized law enforcement equipment is provided and required. The work is typically performed while sitting; however, bending, crouching, stooping, standing, climbing, walking or running are frequent. The work frequently involves pushing, pulling, manipulating, holding, lifting or carrying loads or objects of more than fifty pounds. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. The work is performed in an indoor controlled environment and also outdoors in all forms of weather that may be very hot, cold, inclement or extreme. At times, work will be performed in the presence of citizens and may even have traffic which may contribute to the complexity of the position. Frequently works in emergency and high-stress situations. Certain medical conditions and medications can disqualify a candidate. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions. Skill in the interpretation and analysis of data and in the preparation of related reports. Skill in oral and written communications. Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices. Ability to learn departmental and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local guidelines. Ability to learn city streets and geography. Ability to learn how to use firearms and restraint equipment. Ability to learn how to operate emergency vehicles and related equipment. Ability to use a computer with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to multi-task multiple projects or issues simultaneously and meet firm deadlines. Strong skills to be able to interact professionally and build good working relationships with others. Must be able to effectively communicate with others, and adequately and respectfully deal with members of the general public. High School Diploma or GED. Minimum 18 years of age, 21 years of age or over preferred. Citizen of the United States. Not have been convicted of a crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment. Having good moral character as determined by investigation of the criminal history of the candidate to verify that there is no recent pattern of offense that may indicate less than good moral character. Prior experience that has allowed a thorough understanding of law enforcement. Prior work experience that indicates an understanding of workplace expectations and behaviors. Successfully passing the minimum physical agility requirements upon employment and continually thereafter. Must pass a polygraph test, a psychological evaluation, and comprehensive background check. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia. This is an hourly position at a pay rate of $19.43 per hour and includes a competitive benefits package with a generous pension plan. Upon graduation from POST the hourly pay rate increases to $28.16 per hour.
