Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard)

Summary About the position: This position is Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Buckner Fitness Center Pool and Elmendorf Fitness Center Pool on JBER, AK. Applications are open to ages 16 and older. You may work 0 hours per week up to 40 hours per week. Flexible employees schedules depend on the needs of the activity and may be subjected to "on call" work in addition to hours posted on the schedule. Responsibilities Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area. Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions. When working at pools, may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards. Ensures that diving boards, swimming equipment, and deck area are inspected frequently for cracks, loose matting, debris or hazards and that necessary repairs and notification(s) are made. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include cleaning of bath houses, main pools, pool decks, etc. If interested in applying for this position you may preview the online application: Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: Open to everyone. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualifying Experience: For pool and aquatic center lifeguards: Must have an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training. Individual must have or receive this certification prior to or within the first 30 days of employment. Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI), State Criminal History Repository Check(SCHRC), and Installation Records Check (IRC). Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying. Additional Information Individual must fully meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position. U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Nationals who have resided in the U.S. Territory for three (3) or more consecutive years immediately preceding the start of Federal affiliation or a signed memorandum indicating the installation's decision on the 3-year residency requirement..
