SAFETY COORDINATOR

Fairbanks Morse Defense

Reports to: EHS Director

Locations: Houston, TX, or Chesapeake, VA

Summary

The Safety Coordinator is an entry-level Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) role responsible for assisting the EHS Director with the coordination and day-to-day administration of workplace safety activities. Based at the Fairbanks Morse Defense Service Center in Chesapeake, Virginia, or Houston, Texas, this position provides hands-on support to employees working in service environments and local shipyards.

The Safety Coordinator will help organize safety training, maintain records, coordinate audits and emergency drills, follow up on reported safety concerns, and support employee onboarding and Safety Champion activities. The position works under the direction and guidance of the EHS Director and is not responsible for independently managing the company’s EHS programs.

Fairbanks Morse Defense’s mission is to deliver innovative, reliable, and mission-critical solutions that empower our customers to protect and serve with confidence. Safety is essential to that mission and to protecting the employees who support operational readiness.

This opportunity is well suited for someone beginning or developing a career in workplace safety. The ideal candidate is organized, approachable, willing to learn, and comfortable working directly with technicians and leaders. Mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and an interest in developing practical safety knowledge are important.

Approximately 50% of travel and schedule flexibility are required. The travel consists of short-term day trips or overnight trips.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the EHS Director in promoting an approachable, professional, and team-oriented safety culture across FMA locations.

  • Help coordinate, facilitate, and document safety training for new hires and current technicians.

  • Track annual compliance training and follow up with employees regarding incomplete or upcoming requirements.

  • Assist the EHS Director with organizing and coordinating annual safety stand-downs at FMA locations.

  • Confirm and document that technicians have completed the qualifications required for their assigned positions.

  • Maintain safety training records accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate biweekly Safety Champion meetings, check-ins, communications, and related documentation.

  • Participate in site visits and safety audits at FMA facilities and local shipyards where technicians are stationed.

  • Assist with gathering and submitting information related to FMA work-related incidents and Workers’ Compensation reporting.

  • Track employee safety observations and opportunities, coordinate follow-up, and maintain related documentation.

  • Support annual safety program reviews, including reviews of lockout/tagout procedures and other OSHA-related requirements.

  • Coordinate annual emergency drills, including fire and tornado drills, and assist Safety Champions with documenting drills at FMA facilities.

  • Compile safety data and assist the EHS Director in reviewing quarterly trends, goals, and follow-up activities.

  • Support the service DLA program by organizing documentation, coordinating training, and assisting with related activities.

  • Maintain an active presence in service environments while completing assigned administrative responsibilities.

  • Assist with preparing Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, reports, training materials, and written procedures.

  • Escalate safety concerns, incidents, and questions to the EHS Director for guidance and resolution.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the EHS Director or department management.

  • Travel approximately 50% of the time.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential required.

  • Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, safety coursework, or relevant training in Environmental, Health, and Safety or a related field is preferred but not required.

Experience

  • This is an entry-level opportunity; previous professional EHS experience is not required.

  • Internship, school, military, manufacturing, service, shipyard, or other hands-on workplace experience is helpful.

  • Experience in presenting information, assisting with training, or maintaining documentation is preferred.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment is helpful.

  • Comfortable speaking with individuals and small groups and developing the ability to facilitate training.

  • Approachable, professional, and willing to ask questions and seek guidance.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines with direction from the EHS Director.

  • Ability to work effectively with employees at different levels of the organization.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude or an interest in learning about service and shipyard operations.
