Groundskeeper

The Groundskeeper provides a safe, clean, and inspiring environment for our students and staff by maintaining District and campus grounds and landscaping. Essential functions include removing garbage and debris from grounds, emptying waste receptacles, cleaning fence lines and curbings, sweeping sidewalks and courts, and hosing down sidewalks and other surfaces as required. The Groundskeeper also maintains and prepares athletic fields, irrigates lawns, maintains sprinklers, repairs trees, grass, dirt, gravel, plants, and bushes, washes sidewalks, tables, and walls to remove dirt, gum, and other debris, and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks. The Groundskeeper assists other trades with tasks as needed and supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff.

Required qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent preferred, six months previous landscaping or grounds maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required, and a valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card is required or must be obtained within the first 90 workdays of employment.

Ideal candidates will have skills in maintaining trees, foliage, shrubs, grass, and other greenery, operating a variety of groundskeeping related tools and equipment, following verbal and written instructions and procedures, following safety practices and procedures, prioritizing and completing assignments with minimum supervision, communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, providing excellent customer experiences, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, and using initiative within organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines.

The work is performed throughout District facilities and school campuses and requires exposure to various weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, and hazardous chemicals and fumes. The Groundskeeper may be required to climb ladders and lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. Physical ability to perform all of the essential functions is required.
